R&D Mechanical Engineer - Complex Fluids Research (Experienced)

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to contribute to an experimental program performing research, development and application work related to complex fluids\. Current areas of interest include fluid mechanics and heat transfer, with applications to dynamic systems, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, foams, emulsions and suspensions, polymer gels, epoxies and molten metals and phenomena ranging from wetting, flow, transport mechanics, and adhesion\. Research is supported at a wide range of levels from fundamental research on model systems and development of new experimental methods to support for complex real\-world problems\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Conduct research involving the fundamental physics of fluid, thermal, and chemical phenomena

+ Work with laboratory staff at all levels to conceive and conduct experimental research

+ Design experiments, develop diagnostics, acquire and analyze data

+ Coordinate experimental research teams including staff and technologists

+ Collaborate with analysts to help develop and validate computational models

+ Contribute as part of collaborative teams and independently direct research projects

+ Build on broad foundational knowledge to contribute in new technical areas

+ Work with management, other Sandia organizations, and outside agencies to find and maintain funding for research efforts

+ Present and publish key results to the scientific community and production teams


+ Bachelors degree in a STEM discipline

+ Masters degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or related STEM discipline

+ Two years of relevant experience

+ Experience conducting experimental research on basic and applied transport phenomena

+ Experience with experimental diagnostic development, data acquisition, and data / image analysis

+ Good communication skills, as evidenced by a record of peer\-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance


+ PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or a related STEM discipline

+ Demonstrated flexibility and interest in solving a variety of fluids and heat transfer problems

+ Laboratory experience in the areas of fluid mechanics, laser diagnostics, rheological characterization and analysis of materials

+ Experience using data acquisition and analysis software, including MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar

+ Experience working in multi\-disciplinary teams including experimentalists and analysts to develop and validate computational models

+ Current, active DoE Clearance

Department Description:

The Diagnostic Science and Engineering Department \(01512\) develops and applies diagnostics for engineering sciences applications\. We develop the expertise needed to adapt measurement techniques to challenging environments and understand the additional uncertainty which may be introduced\. For model validation, we work in tandem with modelers to design optimum experiments\. We assist data users in interpreting and understanding experimental results\. Finally, we apply our expertise to understand the limitations of any diagnostic and the experimental uncertainty of the resulting data\. The department is engaged in experimental activities in fluid mechanics, multiphase and reactive flows, rheology, shock science, and the thermal, chemical and mechanical characterization of materials, including polymeric and energetic materials\. Our efforts are focused on \(1\) development and application of advanced diagnostics, \(2\) conduct of fundamental experiments to unravel unresolved phenomenology and to characterize material properties and material response, \(3\) design and performance of validation experiments supporting the Center's code development efforts, and \(4\) experimental support for weapon qualification/certification\. The department has responsibility for the operation of thermal/fluids laboratories, pilot\-scale multiphase flow test\-beds, full\-field measurement of material response and material characterization \(DIC\), and rheological characterization facilities\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
