We are seeking a Metallurgist to conduct basic and applied research in process science and engineering, with a focus on soldering technology\. This requires engagement in both scientific research and hands\-on engineering, and involves developing soldering specifications in support of numerous projects across the laboratories and with production vendors\.



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Provide technical program development and management

+ Support engineering applications, writing technical papers and reports, and presenting results at program meetings and professional conferences

+ Conduct short term problem solving and failure analysis in support of customer needs

+ Travel up to 25% of the time, generally for 4\-5 days each trip, to Kansas City, California, Washington, DC, and vendor shops to support ongoing business needs



Required:



+ BS and PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related discipline

+ Experience with materials and process characterization techniques, and process\-structure\-property relationships

+ Experience publishing papers in peer reviewed journals and presenting research at technical conferences

+ Knowledge and experience with welding engineering design concepts and technical specifications\.

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

+ Strong communication, teaming, and interpersonal skills and an interest in working well with other high\-performing contributors\.

+ A commitment to customer support, including a demonstrated ability to understand and meet their needs

+ Experience with joining processes such soldering, brazing or welding and related physical metallurgy concepts

+ A track record of both written professional publications and oral presentations

+ Experience with production and manufacturing

+ Project management and development experience

+ Experience with materials characterization techniques

+ Experience with process control concepts and techniques

+ Current L or Q clearance



Department Description:



The Metallurgy and Materials Joining Department is the principal organization for metallurgy research and engineering support throughout the Laboratories\. Expertise covers a broad range of experimental and predictive capabilities that apply fundamental process, physical and mechanical metallurgy principles\. Specific technical areas include joining \(welding, brazing and soldering\), mechanical behavior and materials and processes for microsystems packaging\. The scientific focus is on materials structures, properties, performance and reliability\. Staff supports an extensive variety of national security programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems\-based engineering solutions\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
