We are seeking a Manager for the Pulsed Power Engineering Department (01693). This role provides the opportunity to lead mechanical engineers and designers in their delivery of pulsed power systems, components and concepts to the Puled Power Sciences Center?s many programs.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Lead the department with the primary focus of safe by design intent
+ Develop staff (mentoring, coaching, training, teaming, and career development) to achieve a high performing team capable of meeting the engineering and design challenges in the Pulsed Power Sciences Center with safety as the focus
+ Manage/oversee teams of engineers and designers working with colleagues from across the laboratory (explosives, materials, processing) in their delivery of complex systems to safety, schedule, scope, and budget requirements
+ Manage/oversee the team in the delivery of facilities solutions to the pulsed power machines and systems in the center (insulating oils, De-Ionized water, insulating gases, cryogens)
+ Team with the center?s management staff to assure that the skills and resources required to meet the center?s engineering and design objectives are readily available and performing as required
+ Team with 1690 management staff in the development and continuous improvement of the engineering and design processes of the group with a focus on quality
+ Perform general management responsibilities in the daily management of a large engineering and design team


+ Bachelor's and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering or STEM discipline
+ 12 years of professional experience
+ Experience leading complex R&D projects including experience with moderate level hazards
+ Project management experience with successful delivery (safety scope, schedule, budget)
+ Experience with safe work planning & control for moderate-rigor activities
+ Experience leading a team in meeting customer needs
+ Experience working with cross-functional team
+ Current, active DoE L clearance
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance


+ 4 years of line management experience involving moderate-rigor activities
+ Experience with advance engineering tools including CREO, ABAQUS, ANSYS, CTH, etc., including implementation experience
+ Experience with pulsed power/accelerator technology
+ Experience leading complex R&D projects with accelerator level hazards
+ Experience with radiation generating devices
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills

The Pulsed Power Engineering Department (01693) provides fundamental, advanced, and cutting edge engineering to support the advanced science research and development programs in the Pulsed Power Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. The department?s engineers, designers and technologists work together with the center?s scientists to deliver engineered solutions in the complex development needs of next generation advanced pulsed power accelerators, sustainment and enhancement of current machines, execution of experiments on these facilities, and maintenance of the oil/water/gas infrastructures. The department uses CREO® and SolidWorks® computer aided design platforms and advanced engineering tools like ABAQUS® and Sandia?s CTH Shock Physics and Sierra Suite Codes to perform complex engineering analysis in support of the Center?s programs.
