Job Title:R&D Manager, Enterprise Information Management


The Enterprise Information Management group (10730) is seeking a motivated Level 1 manager to lead the Knowledge Systems department (10737). This team encompasses a collection of computer science, information technology, and information management professionals responsible for the research, design, development, and deployment of enterprise search capabilities that enable the workforce to find and retrieve information within our enterprise environment. Key functions of the work this department is involved in includes the researching, designing, development, and deployment of advanced techniques in content analytics, statistical predictive/classification modeling, and automatic categorization. Focus areas include search algorithm development, social tagging, clustering, personalization, taxonomy creation, and user experience.

The successful candidate should have a demonstrated ability to work across several customer domains and deliver production quality software within time and budget constraints while performing cutting edge research within the field of unstructured text analytics and search.


+ Requires a bachelor's and master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, or related technical field. Must also have eight or more years of relevant experience.
+ Demonstrated success in leading technical R&D software development projects.
+ Demonstrated success in transitioning R&D technologies into production IT environments.
+ Experience with software engineering techniques (examples may include: object-oriented design, design patterns, test driven development, agile software development)
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a required DOE Q-level security clearance.


+ Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
+ Demonstrated leadership skills including strategic planning, creating roadmaps, developing partnerships, team building, and career development.
+ Relevant experience and demonstrated success in introducing new technologies and capabilities.
+ Experience in leading agile software development teams.
+ Excellent people skills with demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a teaming environment.
+ Experience with text analytics, statistical modeling, classification models, machine learning, and information retrieval.
+ Experience with database technologies (e.g., Oracle, SQL, NoSQL, MongoDB, Neo4J).
+ Experience with software development technologies (e.g. Eclipse, Git, SVN, Maven, Ant, JUnit, JMeter).
+ Skills in web application design and development (e.g., Java EE, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, Web Services, AngularJS).

The Knowledge Systems team architects and implements innovative, high impact solutions in the field of informatics to transform the ability of the workforce to find and use the vast amount unstructured information contained within our information environment. We take advantage of advances in search engine technology, text analytics, and user experience to radically transform how staff travel on their information journey. A goal is for people to encounter information they need before they even know that they need it. Key focus areas include:

+ Research and develop capabilities to provide answers in response to search queries.
+ Make our information environment smart by adding an awareness layer to our application space that listens to our query space and responds.
+ Advance the state of the art in text analytics to improve information findability.
+ Evolve the user experience based on behavior analysis.
+ Conceptualize and develop solutions to provide personalized information views based on a topic or search query making use of what we know about the individual (job title, organization, search history) as well as external triggers (time of day, week, month, or year, major events).
+ Implement visualization capabilities for interacting with search results.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
