The Grid Modernization and Resilient Infrastructures Group \(8810\) focuses on creating the energy infrastructure of the future for the civilian and military sectors\. This is a very exciting time for Sandia and the nation as we address technical challenges in our electric infrastructure related to high penetration of renewable energy; increased natural and other threats; and greatly increased levels of information and automation\. We focus on solutions that enhance our national security via the development of resilient infrastructures\. The solution space includes Sandia leadership in the advancement of microgrids, energy storage, transmission and distribution level integration of renewables, defense energy, and cybersecurity\. We also address the interdependencies among infrastructures as we develop tools and technologies to aid decisions in planning and investment\. Group 8810 consists of four departments, Energy Storage Technology and Systems, Photovoltaic and Distributed Systems Integration, Electric Power Systems Research, and Resilience and Regulatory Effects\.



We are seeking a Department Manager for the Electric Power Systems Research Department \(8813\)\. As department manager, you will lead staff in the development and execution of exciting new program activities that define our electric grid infrastructure for the future\. You will develop new partnerships across Sandia to leverage our core competencies as well as with external organizations who complement our capabilities and share our strategic vision\. You will also interface with customers in the US Department of Energy and other US Government Agencies, such as DOD, DHS, and Department of State\.



As department manager, on any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Create and execute a vision for the department and your program team in collaboration with your colleagues in our energy storage, renewable and distributed systems integration, and resilience and regulatory analytics departments, as well as other managers across the NM Energy and Geosciences Center \(8800\) and the rest of Sandia, applying a broad spectrum of core S&T strengths to address pressing national security needs related to a secure and resilient energy infrastructure\.

+ Contribute to the evolving national security strategies across Sandias broad energy and infrastructure program areas\.

+ Participate in the national dialogue on grid modernization as you interact directly with external partners in professional societies, the Grid Modernization Lab Consortium, and various industry, academic, and government research organizations, and build your world\-class teams to address the nations toughest grid problems and challenges\.

+ Develop new programs through white papers and proposals to strengthen our core competencies and diversify the departments customer base, including Lab\-Directed Research and Development projects\.

+ Provide technical leadership and create a learning environment for a strong, diverse, and growing department staff by allocating and prioritizing work while managing staff and financial resources\.

+ Guide your team in developing new experiments in your Control and Optimization of Networked Energy Technologies \(CONET\) laboratory, one of a Sandia\-wide set of distributed labs through which we can conduct a variety of advanced grid experiments\.

Required:



+ Bachelors degree in STEM or relevant discipline;

+ Advanced degree \(Masters or PhD\) in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field;

+ Eight or more years of relevant technical experience;

+ Proven expertise in program development;

+ Demonstrated experience in managing hands\-on lab work and adherence to safe engineering principles;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.



Desired:



+ PhD in Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field;

+ Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience;

+ Successful track record in leading and conducting team\-based R&D in one or more of the following: power systems, power electronics, control systems, optimization;

+ Recognized expertise in power systems engineering and the US Electric Grid structure and regulation; for example, via publication history, participation on international panels, etc\.;

+ Excellent oral and written communications and customer service skills;

+ Ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external customers, including the ability to build and manage effective working relationships;

+ Demonstrated ability to deliver results, effectively manage people, and guide multidisciplinary research teams;

+ Ability to mentor and lead the organization on department tasks and organizational goals and objects\.



Department Description:



The Electric Power Systems Research Department \(Dept\. 8813\) conducts R&D and advanced analytics to enable the modernization of the nation's electric power grid\. This work includes the development of improved planning, operations, and control methodologies to enhance resilience from the bulk system down to end users\. Our capabilities encompass the development and application of advanced algorithmic and computational methods, grid operations, economics, and policy\. Examples of specific core areas include power system dynamics and resilience, control systems design, new grid architectures, communications and cyber security, electricity market development, information and decision analytics, and optimal resource expansion\. The department is highly inter\-disciplinary, working collaboratively with universities, utilities, government agencies, and both national and international research organizations\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.



Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
