R&D Manager - Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle Technology (8843)

We are seeking a Manager to oversee the Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle Technology Department\. The Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle Technology Department \(8843\) is responsible for numerous projects related to the Back End of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle \(BENFC\), Storage and Transportation of Spent Nuclear Fuel \(SNF\), SNF Security, and Radioactive Power Source Launch Safety \(PRSLS\), among others\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Oversee the Nuclear Energy Work Complex in TA III, which consists of two experimental facilities, CYBL and SURTSEY;

+ Collaborate with industry directly \(SPPs\) and in support of DOE Office of Nuclear Energy programs related to the BENFC\. Some examples of SPPs are experimental projects with NAC International, Inc\. \(a US storage and transportation designer and vendor\), and examples of other collaborations with industry is participation in the EPRI Extended Storage Collaborative Project \(ESCP\) and the EPRI High\-Burnup Demonstration Project;

+ Be responsible, under the RPSLS, for the safety assessment supporting the launch decision for space missions that involve a radioactive payload; through 8843, Sandia is supporting the MARS2020 mission;

+ Work as one of four departments within 8840 to work on and provide technical and integration leadership for the DOE NEs BENFC R&D program\. This involves not only close coordination among the four departments \(8842, 8843, 8844 and 8845\) but also coordination of work with other national labs and frequent direct interactions with our DOE NE\-8 customer;

+ Interact with the manager of Department 8841 as well as the business team assigned to support the Advanced Nuclear Energy Programs 8840;

+ Develop and sustain partnerships with other organizations within Sandia, other laboratories, industry, and academia;

+ Promote and support the professional development of staff along with assessment of performance, balancing work assignments, providing recognition, and if necessary dealing with disciplinary actions\.


+ Bachelors degree in STEM and advanced degree \(Masters or PhD\) in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, Physics, Geosciences/Hydrology, or a related field, OR Bachelor's degree in STEM plus four years' relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree;

+ Eight or more years of relevant technical experience;

+ Proven expertise in program development;

+ Demonstrated experience interacting with multiple levels of internal management and external customers;

+ Demonstrated ability to manage people, and guide multidisciplinary teams;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.


+ PhD in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, Physics, Geosciences/Hydrology, or a related field;

+ Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience;

+ Successful track record in leading and conducting team\-based R&D in the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle, risk/performance assessment, and the preparation of safety analysis reports;

+ Excellent oral and written communications and customer service skills;

+ Ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external customers, including the ability to build and manage effective working relationships;

+ Demonstrated ability to deliver results;

+ Ability to mentor and lead the organization on department tasks and organizational goals and objects;

+ Ability to undertake business travel to build and sustain customer and partner relationships;

Department Description:

The Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle Technologies Department conducts R&D and applied technology development to find solutions for technical and safety issues associated with the use of nuclear materials in nuclear fuel cycles and space applications, and R&D related to transportation and storage of nuclear wastes from commercial facilities\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
