R&D Lab Support Technologist - Z Machine Nuclear Diagnostics (Experienced)

We are seeking a Lab Support Technologist to play a lead role in fielding, calibration, and development of neutron diagnostics on the Z machine\. In this role, you will be a member of a cross\-functional team supporting the Z accelerator, fielding diagnostics during all shot series in which neutrons are produced\. In addition, you will work closely with experimenters in diagnostic development, assembly, testing, and calibration\. This involves coordinating characterization experiments, leading data collection in light labs and at other accelerator facilities, and documenting results\. The work areas consist of Beryllium and Radiological contamination and work areas, Confined Space, and wearing a respirator is required along with wearing Tyvek suits and other Personal Protective Equipment \(PPE\) for certain operations\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assemble, calibrate, and refurbish diagnostic instruments within and upon the 100 ft\. diameter, 20 ft\. tall Z Pulsed Power tank and other sites

+ Maintain laboratory space and coordinate with other facilities

+ Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians for diagnostic development, maintenance, and Z shot activities

+ Prepare and refurbish hardware

+ Assemble very fragile components

+ Use power tools, hand tools, and pneumatic press

+ Operate high\-voltage detector electronics and work with radioactive sources, radiation generating devices and components for diagnostic calibration activities

+ Maintain records and documentation

+ Travel as needed to support activities in other locations, including NStec\-Las Vegas, Nevada Test Site, Idaho State Universitys LINAC, and others


+ High school diploma plus 5 years of experience

+ Experience operating hand tools and power tools

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance


+ Bachelors degree in a related technical field, such as electrical, mechanical, or nuclear engineering, or the physical sciences

+ Experience in a fast\-paced work environment

+ Experience fielding experiments or diagnostics at a major pulsed power or high\-energy\-density physics facility

+ Experience with ES&H requirements for pulsed power technology

+ Experience working in PPE for long periods of time

+ Experience performing radiological work and interacting with radiological support groups

+ Electro\-mechanical skills including using calibration instruments diagnostics testing

+ Experience supporting the setup of experimental equipment such as nuclear electronics, vacuum chambers, gamma\-ray detectors, neutron activation detectors, and data acquisition systems

+ Experience designing and building electronic circuits, proper cable plants, and data acquisition systems including digitizers, pulse generators, high\-voltage power supplies, and the necessary interfacing from instruments to computer control

+ Strong customer focus and ability to build effective relationships across organizational boundaries

+ Understanding of the interaction between experimenters needs and facility support

+ Good communication skills to plan and execute experiments effectively

+ Excellent verbal, written, planning, and interpersonal skills conducive to working as a part of a large team

+ Self\-motivation, flexibility, and adaptability

+ Experience implementing quality principles and standards

+ Co\-authored publications in a related area of research, such as nuclear physics, nuclear fusion or fission reactor technology, experimental or theoretical/computation neutron environments, neutron or x\-ray radiation sources or diagnostics, high\-energy\-density or plasma physics

Department Description:

Department 1677, Neutron & Particle Diagnostics, develops and fields neutron diagnostics at the Z pulsed power facility in support of the Inertial Confinement Fusion and Radiation Effects Sciences programs, leads fast neutron and nuclear physics studies, and collaborates in neutron source development and high\-energy\-density physics studies at Z\. The department is composed of scientists and technologists, working together in a collaborative environment and interacting with scientists from around the world that work on the Z accelerator to pursue research in the areas of nuclear fusion and plasma physics\.
