We are seeking a R&D, Geosciences Engineer who will lead a team of researchers in developing geomechanics models for use in WIPP Performance Assessment\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Reside in Carlsbad, NM, this is mandatory;

+ Go underground at WIPP and consult on WIPP mining operations;

+ Perform calculations, write reports, make presentations, travel to conferences\.


+ Bachelor's in relevant STEM discipline;

+ Master's degree in Geomechanics, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline plus two or more years experience; or PhD in Geomechanics, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience;

+ Experience in numerical modeling of mechanical problems with finite element schemes;

+ Experience \(and/or education\) must include development of conceptual and numerical models, model calibration and uncertainty quantification;


+ All of the above with an emphasis on the geomechanics of salt;

+ Must also be able to report to and communicate to non\-experts in geomechanics;

+ Must be able to understand geomechanics experiments and how to use the results for parameterization of models;

+ Demonstrated excellence in the technical field as well as superior oral and written communication skills are mandatory, as is the ability to function effectively within a diverse team\.

Department Description:

Waste Isolation Pilot Plant \(WIPP\) is the world's only licensed and operating deep geologic repository for the disposal of transuranic waste\. WIPP is operated by Nuclear Waste Partnership \(NWP\), under contract to the Department of Energy's Carlsbad Field Office \(CBFO\)\. Sandia provides scientific advice to CBFO in many areas, including modifications to the repository's operating permits, periodic recertification of the repository, on\-going monitoring of repository performance against regulatory requirements, and optimization of the national transurance waste complex\. The Repository Performance Department \(08882\), part of Sandia's Carlsbad Programs Group, provides the experimental and fieldwork capability needed to assist CBFO in assuring continued and uninterrupted licensure and permitting of WIPP\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.
