The Geophysics Department is seeking an individual to serve as a seismology subject matter expert \(SME\) in support of the Geophysical Monitoring System \(GMS\) project\. The GMS project is a large\-scale, multi\-year software development effort to re\-engineer the primary nuclear detection monitoring system used by the U\.S\. national nuclear treaty monitoring organization, the Air Force Technical Applications Center \(AFTAC\)\. Sandia has worked with AFTAC to develop requirements, specifications and an architectural design for the new system and recently began system development activities in earnest\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work with a team comprised mainly of computer scientists \(software developers, system engineers, etc\.\), but because the project is based on complex applied geophysics, deep subject matter expertise in geophysics is required at the system level to ensure the GMS will be able to meet the operational monitoring mission;

+ Work as a member of the GMS geophysics SME team, which is an integral part of the overall GMS development team\. The geophysics SME team is responsible for preparing the computer\-science\-based developers to correctly implement geophysical algorithms they will be coding, including defining test procedures, metrics, and data sets; working with the developers as they code the algorithms; and for validating the scientific integrity of the resultant software both at a unit level and as part of the overall integrated system;

+ Support the GMS project at approximately 75% of full\-time work level for at least three years\. The range of geophysics concepts involved in treaty monitoring is very broad, so this is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to extend both the range and the depth of their existing geophysical domain expertise;

+ Support existing geophysics department R&D efforts as means of maintaining and/or growing their technical diversity and expertise\. Longer term, the expectation will be to provide expertise to Sandia mission area programs and ultimately help define, develop, and execute novel, high\-impact, cross\-disciplinary team efforts within them that advance the state of the art\. This will be accomplished by pursuing funding opportunities via a competitive internal laboratory\-directed research and development \(LDRD\) proposal process and competitive proposal processes for both internal and external sponsors within Sandias mission area program portfolio;

+ Increase both Sandias and their own impact and standing in these programs by producing high\-quality results, which can include limited\-distribution deliverables, publications in peer\-reviewed journals, patents, conference presentations, reports, etc\., depending on sponsor requirements;

+ Perform the work according to Sandia values, which include serving national needs, delivering with excellence, respect for others, teaming, and scientific integrity\.


+ Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM discipline and a Master's degree in Geophysics, or closely\-related discipline;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.


+ PhD in Geophysics, or closely\-related discipline;

+ Demonstrated research experience in seismology\- and infrasound\-based signal enhancement \(filtering, beaming, etc\.\), signal detection, signal association \(event building\), event location, magnitude estimation, event discrimination, waveform correlation;

+ Knowledge of various seismic and infrasound data formats and respective analysis methodologies;

+ Demonstrated proficiency in a Unix environment and Unix shell scripting as well as proficiency in one or more of the following languages: Python, MATLAB, Linux, SAC, GMT, SQL;

+ Familiarity with ground\-based nuclear detonation detection monitoring or equivalent operational earthquake monitoring experience;

+ Strong organizational, written, oral, and presentation skills, including the ability effectively communicate scientific/engineering concepts and results at multiple levels \(highly technical to high\-level/programmatic\);

+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively both individually and on teams as well as experience working on interdisciplinary teams;

+ Demonstrated ability deliver high\-quality results on\-time and on\-schedule under challenging circumstances;

+ Demonstrated ability to help customers define requirements and technical path forward;

+ Demonstrated experience defining and executing research and development efforts, from the proposal writing stage to delivery and dissemination of results;

+ Demonstrated ability to adapt to change;

+ Familiarity with developing operational realtime monitoring software;

+ Active DOE Q\-level security clearance\.

Department Description:

The Geophysics Department at Sandia National Laboratories performs geophysics research and development in support of Sandia's mission as a national security laboratory\. We apply our expertise to address national\-level challenges in Sandia mission area programs, including nuclear explosion monitoring, energy exploration and resource characterization in support of national energy security, nuclear nonproliferation, defense, homeland security, and nuclear weapons\. Security Clearance:

Position requires a SCI security clearance\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.
