R&D Electromechanical Technologist - Test Components Maintenance (Experienced)

We are seeking an Electromechanical Technologist to ensure facility readiness through maintenance of test facility components\. This role requires extensive outdoor work in potentially extreme conditions, including high temperatures, inclement weather, and working on the ground\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Maintain components including infrastructure wiring, fiber optics, and temperature conditioning equipment

+ Plan and prepare for the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic/mechanical equipment in the field

+ Document configuration of equipment and instruments

+ Inventory and maintain databases for equipment

+ Help diagnose problems, repair electrical and mechanical equipment, and provide technical support for research and development activities

+ Help develop safety procedures and documentation

+ Coordinate with engineers, technologists and contractors on facility and equipment repairs, installation, troubleshooting, logistics, and documentation

+ Independently pursue solutions to technical problems with minimal direction

+ Provide regular written and oral reports on activities

+ Serve as a console operator for experiments, to include coordinating test personnel, guiding the team through the operation procedures and helping ensure safe operation of the experiment

+ Support temperature conditioning equipment including test planning, design, and field operation and troubleshooting

+ Travel for several days per quarter, which may include weekends


+ High school diploma plus three years experience in Electronics, Electro\-Mechanical, Engineering, or other technical discipline

+ Experience with schematics, drawings, layouts, and/or similar specifications

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance


+ Associate's degree in relevant Mechanical or Electrical concentration areas

+ Ability and willingness to work outside in the field to support test facilities

+ Computer system, electronic equipment and scientific instrument hardware installation replacement and repair

+ Ability to produce technical documentation including manuals and guides

+ Active Commercial Drivers License or ability to obtain one

+ Experience operating heavy equipment

+ Experience with electrical/mechanical systems, including design, installation, testing, repair, and maintenance

+ Experience with R&D design and fabrication, including proficiency with SolidWorks and/or CREO

+ Experience with instrument systems and automated data collection systems

+ Demonstrated experience working to Operating Procedure and ES&H requirements including Engineered Safety

+ Experience with construction\-like activities

+ Demonstrated ability to work safely and independently with minimum direct supervision

+ Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team

+ Demonstrated and verifiable interpersonal and communication skills, including time management, conflict resolution, ability to take instruction/direction, and critical problem\-solving skills

+ Willingness to learn and apply new skills

+ Ability and willingness to work under structured Work Planning & Controls process

+ Commitment to operational safety, security and quality

Department Description:

The Experimental Operations Department 1533 provides an array of capabilities and services for Sandias Validation and Qualification Sciences Experimental Complex \(VQSEC\) which enables it to accomplish its mission as the center of excellence for environmental testing within the Department of Energys National Nuclear Security Administration Nuclear Weapons Complex\. These full life cycle capabilities include engineering design and fabrication of test hardware and fixtures; structural and thermal analysis supporting experimental design; hazard and system safety analysis; execution of tests and experiments in controlled mechanical, energetic, and thermal environments, including set up and dismantlement; and operation and maintenance of one\-of\-a\-kind facilities including the Aerial Cable Facility, Burn Site, Rocket Sled Track Complex, and Thermal Test Complex\. Department personnel collaborate with test directors, test and safety engineers, and instrumentation, photometric, and data acquisition personnel to ensure the infrastructure and facilities necessary to conduct subsystem and system level tests and experiments in normal and abnormal environments are available\. Additionally, the department provides mission assurance in the form of risk assessments and failure mode analysis; design engineering processes support; leadership in the integration of standard business practices across the VQSEC; administration of the ES&H program for the Engineering Sciences Center \(1500\); management of the VQSEC test support contractors and training program; and configuration management of VQSEC moderate hazard facilities\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
