We are seeking a R&D Electromagnetic Pulse Phenomenology Analyst

An opening exists for a recently graduated PhD\-level candidate to conduct electromagnetic source, propagation, and sensing analyses in support of the USNDS program and other national security customers\. Specific tasks include characterizing electromagnetic sources and propagation in order to simulate remotely detected signals\. Programming in C\+\+ and Python are key skills for this part of the job\. Another aspect of the position is reverse engineering sensed signals, requiring an understanding of sensor models and post\-processing algorithms\. It is desired for the successful candidate to learn the relevant phenomenology aspects of the job as well as the engineered systems that sense them, enabling them to grow into a Subject Matter Expert role for the USNDS program\. Day\-to\-day activities include meeting with customers to define work and communicate progress on activities, working individually or in small teams, conducting analyses using modeling and simulation, troubleshooting software/High Performance Computing issues, and developing presentations and technical reports\. Being able to articulate deep technical information in a way that customers can practically act on is important to developing and maintaining a good working relationship between the candidate and the national security customer\. The candidate is expected to provide as well as to accept critical peer review to ensure technically accurate results are provided\. On\-the\-job training will be provided to understand specific customer systems\. Minimal travel is required\.


PhD in electrical engineering, physics, engineering physics, nuclear engineering, or a related discipline

Experience in computational simulation of electromagnetic wave generation by ionizing radiation or high power microwaves and subsequent propagation

Programming experience, preferably C\+\+ and Python scripting

Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a required US DOE Q security


High level of academic success in undergraduate and graduate programs

Understanding of plasma physics

Experience in parallel programming and debugging in high performance computing environments

Understanding of uncertainty quantification methodologies

Experience with signal processing, data analysis, and algorithms

Ability to perform independent research

Excellent communication skills with experience in constructively interacting with coworkers, giving presentations, and preparing reports

Ability to work effectively in a team in various roles \(leader and group member\)

A current DOE Q clearance or Top Secret DoD Clearance\.

Ability and willingness to obtain a SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.

The department advances analysis and algorithms for remote sensing support of the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System \(USNDS\), Nuclear Effects for Survivability and Consequence Management, and Nuclear Forensics\. Missions such as treaty verification, non\-proliferation and nuclear force management, with respect to nuclear detonation detection, are supported by our modeling and software products using optical, particle \(NGX\), and radio\-frequency phenomenologies\. The organization serves as a laboratories R&D resource for nuclear signatures modeling, simulation, and analysis expertise\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\.
