R&D Electrical Engineer - Electromagnetic Effects (Experienced)

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to support technical studies involving survivability and vulnerabilities assessments, mission consequence assessments, and EM effects on complex electrical/electronic systems\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Plan, conceive, conduct, manage, and analyze R&D theoretical modeling and experiments at simulator facilities

+ Provide technical reports for program sponsors and customers

+ Direct systematic study toward a fuller understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts, leading to new approaches to achieve goals

+ Create new understandings and capabilities by using the scientific method's hypothesis, test, and evaluation techniques; critical review; or similar engineering research and development methods

+ Initiate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research

+ Use engineering principles to research, design, or develop structures, instruments, machines, experiments, processes, systems, theories, or technologies; to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions

+ Undertake development and possible technology transfer of solutions, products, principles or technology

+ Undertake creative work, making systematic use of investigation or experimentation, to discover or revise knowledge of reality, and use this knowledge to devise new applications

+ Assist the department manager and group senior manager in program development to support a growing customer base within the DOE NNSA, DOD and other government agencies


+ Bachelors and Masters degree in a STEM discipline plus 5 years experience related to electromagnetics and electromagnetic pulse environments; or PhD in a STEM discipline related to electromagnetics

+ Experience in EMP effects and EMC/EMI analysis and testing

+ Experience leading teams, to include defining and delegating work

+ Experience with external customers at various levels

+ Experience writing technical reports or publishing research results

+ Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance


+ Experience in the qualification of nuclear weapons components and systems in stockpile\-to\-target\-sequence electromagnetic environments\.

+ Experience in lightning, electrostatic discharge, and plasma effects on complex electrical/electronic systems

+ Understanding of high voltage breakdown phenomenology involved in direct strike lightning and electrostatic discharges\.

+ Familiarity in the design of nuclear weapons components and systems

+ Experience in the design and analysis of electromagnetic antennas and instrumentation systems

+ Demonstrated ability to develop enduring programs with government agencies

+ Demonstrated mentoring skills along with the ability to resolve conflicts\.

+ Excellent communication and presentation skills

+ Demonstrated ability to develop and lead research in:

- electrostatic discharge \(ESD\)

- electromagnetics \(EM\)

- electromagnetic pulse \(EMP\) research

- creating and measuring breakdown and arcing phenomena or related plasma physics

+ Demonstrated understanding of

- pulsed power systems

- power electronic and electronic systems

- power systems

+ An active DOE L or Q clearance

Department Description:

Department 1353 is a multidisciplinary research and development group supporting NNSA Defense and Work for Other \(WFO\) Programs\. Our capabilities include experimental electromagnetics, the design and manufacturing of advanced power electronics, compact high current drivers, electron beam accelerators, x\-ray sources, development and analysis of advanced materials and components, and plasma physics\. Department 1353 employs a comprehensive research approach that includes analysis, simulation, and hardware verification\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
