We have an opening for a full-time experienced R&D Cybersecurity researcher to participate in efforts to secure government and critical infrastructure systems. Researchers are expected to apply technical advances to challenging multi-disciplinary problems important to national security. Current areas of research include formal methods, vulnerability assessment, binary analysis, and dynamic analysis.

Team members are expected to conduct innovative research; to lead projects and contribute effectively on research teams; to work with customers to understand needs and propose solutions; and to present results as appropriate at conferences and meetings. Access to knowledge and data in this area will require a security clearance. Some travel is expected to meet with sponsors and support successful execution of programs.


+ Bachelor?s and master's degrees in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline, with an emphasis on cybersecurity and a least 4 years of relevant experience.
+ Evidence of relevant research expertise in the form of technical publications, presentations, software, and/or knowledge of applications.
+ Software development competence in at least one programming language (e.g. C, C++, Java) and one scripting language (e.g. Python, Ruby, or Bash).
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level and SCI security clearance.In order to obtain these clearances, U.S. Citizenship is required.


+ Doctorate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline with an emphasis on cybersecurity.
+ Expertise in one or more of the following: Formal Methods (e.g., Symbolic Execution, Abstract Interpretation, Separation Logic, Model Checking, SMT Solvers), Binary Analysis (e.g., manual or automated reverse engineering of Windows internals, malware, vulnerability assessment), Dynamic Analysis (e.g., binary instrumentation, virtual machine introspection, writing custom fuzzers for complex programs).
+ Demonstrated ability to team effectively in a collaborative research environment.
+ Experience withassembly languages with a preference for x86 and x86-64.
+ Software development experience with a functional language (e.g., OCaml, Haskell, etc.)
+ Software engineering proficiency, particularly with respect to best practices and team development of high-quality code.
+ Familiarity with system level development such as kernel programming or device driver development.
+ Active DOE/DOD/SCI security clearance.

The Cyber Systems Research Department conducts research to develop a deeper understanding of vulnerabilities of cyber and information systems, and researches advanced methods to mitigate them. Our work emphasizes development of effective automated tools to enable cyber security subject matter experts to efficiently focus their energies on the most challenging problems. Our technical staff has expertise in computer science, cyber operations, and related fields, and in a wide range of disciplines including vulnerability assessment, reverse engineering, malware analysis, VM introspection, intrusion detection, network and host forensics, mobile devices and networks. We work in close collaboration with other departments in the Information Security Sciences group, which focuses on the intersection of cyber research, modeling and simulation, data analysis, and cyber operations. We support research in multiple cyber program areas and collaborate closely with organizations in NM and across the cyber community.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
