R&D, Concentrating Solar Technologies Engineer (Early Career)

We are seeking a R&D, Concentrating Solar Technologies Engineer in the Concentrating Solar Technologies Department \(Dept 8823\) to perform R&D in concentrating solar power \(CSP\) technologies for the generation of electricity and fuels at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility \(NSTTF\)\. The NSTTF is the only large\-scale research and testing facility in the United States for CSP technologies\. Work is focused on enabling todays CSP industry and performing R&D that will change the nations energy future\. The department conducts its research and testing in partnership with the US Department of Energy, other national laboratories, industry, and academia\. The department has access to Sandias broader R&D capabilities and expertise, while simultaneously offering testing capabilities and services to other laboratory missions\.

This position is a limited term position as specified above\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Conduct and lead R&D activities, independently and in teams\. These activities may be theoretical, computational and/or experimental, often requiring working in teams that can include partners from other institutions;

+ Take ownership and initiative in various roles in the department, including \(but not limited to\) operation and maintenance of research facilities and capabilities, development and implementation of testing procedures and experiments, support to engineers and technologists in all stages of R&D;

+ Lead or assist in the dissemination of R&D outcomes and the departments capabilities in various forms including journal article publications and by presenting papers at national and international conferences;

+ Lead or assist in development of new research proposals and projects\.


+ Bachelors degree in STEM with 5 or more year of work experience or a Masters degree in STEM with 2 or more years of experience;

+ Demonstrated post educational experience in R&D \(or technology development\) in an academic, laboratory or industry environment\.


+ A passion for increasing the energy security of the nation and world through solar technologies;

+ Five or more years of experience in the CSP industry and/or in CSP R&D;

+ Experience in hands\-on or applied or experimental R&D in any field of energy conversion\. This should include experience in environmental health and safety of work performed;

+ The ability to work closely with technologists in converting R&D concepts into prototypes and to conduct sound experiments;

+ Experience with prototyping, debugging and programming of experimental and prototypical controls such as found in solar collector drive systems;

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.

This Limited Term Employee \(LTE\) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years\.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.
