The Data Systems Engineering Group is looking for qualified Research and Development Computer Science candidates interested in collaborating within a high performing team on next generation technologies to provide solutions to national security applications. The group engineers and delivers technology solutions across the entire spectrum of mission data (producers, consumers, transport, and analysis). These solutions are implemented in a variety of development languages and span hardware/software interfaces through high-level applications and ?systems-of-systems?. Successful applicants will have opportunities to participate in a variety of software development environments from waterfall to agile (Scrum, SAFe) in front-end, back-end, database, UI/UX, testing, and architecture roles. Applicants will also have opportunities to propose and participate in internal research and development efforts. Successful candidates will have opportunities to work in areas such as; embedded and application level software design/development/delivery/test, image and signal processing algorithm development, guidance/navigation/controls algorithm development, UI/UX and mod/sim application development, and applied data science and data analytics/forensics for a variety of Nuclear Weapon, Missile Defense, satellite, and airborne system applications.Some travel may be required.


+ Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) and undergraduate degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
+ Demonstrated software design, development, delivery, and support experience in languages such as C, C++, Java, or similar programming languages.
+ Experience utilizing software revision control tools such as CVS, Subversion, GIT, etc. in a configuration controlled software development environment.
+ Experience with *NIX Operating Systems, associated shells such as BASH, TCSH, etc., common command-line tools such as SED, AWK, GREP, etc., and file structure navigation.


+ An understanding of commonly used data structures and algorithms for software development such as; queues, linked lists, tree structures, graph traversal, runtime analysis, hashing, and others.
+ An understanding of software design and architecture, including use of common UML artifacts and diagrams.
+ Prior demonstrated work or experience in image and signal processing.
+ Proficiency in additional languages such as Python, Perl, Scala, Clojure, Objective-C, etc.
+ Ability to construct and utilize modeling, simulation, and probability/statistics to predict / quantify/qualify results in numerical analysis languages/tools (Matlab, IDL, R, etc).
+ Experience performing verification and validation at both the component/subsystem and system level.
+ Experience with agile testing methodologies and agile software development through Scrum, Kanban, or other processes including XP, test driven development, continuous integration, etc.
+ Ability to utilize debugging tools, static analysis tools, test harnesses, and other capabilities to troubleshoot and fix complex software applications and libraries.
+ Experience designing and implementing SQL and/or NoSQL databases as well as an understanding and experience with query languages and data mining tools for database interaction and multi-source data integration.
+ Understanding of software quality processes and associated certifications such as CMMI.
+ An understanding of client/server, web-based, and server-side computing architectures focusing on metadata mining concepts.
+ Creativity and strong problem solving skills in utilizing data science and data analytic frameworks and applications including supervised and unsupervised classification, machine learning, applied statistics, and other skills.
+ Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team setting for a common purpose.
+ Oral and written communication skills, typically evidenced and demonstrated through technical publications and presentations. Examples can include academic work products, peer-reviewed conferences and publications, internal and external product and/or system whitepapers and technical briefings, test plans and procedures, etc.
+ Demonstrated ability to execute and deliver technical work products with application of appropriate rigor and pedigree documentation (design/code reviews, technical oversight/approvals, project team concurrence, artifact generation, etc).
+ Evidence of high academic achievement, typically represented by undergraduate and graduate GPA.
+ Active DOE Q-Level security clearance.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain an SCI security clearance, which may require a counterintelligence polygraph.
+ Active SCI security clearance.
+ Demonstrated ability to bound/estimate and deliver systems and/or components within negotiated cost, schedule, and performance.
+ Domain knowledge or system experience in any or all of the following areas: nuclear weapons, satellites and payloads, and/or aerospace and flight programs.

The Weapons Design and Assurance Center (2600) is a multi-discipline, product-focused organization that provides engineering design, components, subsystems, integration, testing, and field support for nuclear weapons and other high-consequence national security applications. Examples of these applications include the development of satellite and other space-flight and airborne payloads, testing for high consequence military programs, nuclear weapon safety mechanisms, high reliability electronic products, telemetry and software systems, and data science and analytics. The Center is divided into four main competencies: Advanced Mechanical Design, Firing & Embedded Systems, Hi-Reliability Electronic Products, and Data Systems Engineering.

The successful applicant will join high performing technical teams in the Data Systems Engineering Group and will handle the design, development, qualification, and delivery of highly specialized hardware and software components and subsystems for national security applications. These systems must be designed to meet demanding performance specifications, offer extremely high reliability, enable integration and interfacing to complex host systems, and meet stringent survivability requirements in adverse environments. Successful candidates, depending on skills match and placement within the Data Systems Engineering Group, will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions in a wide variety of disciplines including analog and digital design and development, embedded development for real-time systems, data processing and analysis to include image and signal processing applications, network and communications technology, trusted systems design and development, testing/fielding complex hardware and software systems, and exploratory data analytics and applied data science. Candidates will be exposed to a variety of hardware and software development environments and methodologies spanning traditional waterfall development and systems engineering to agile development processes.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.
