The Secure Commerce and Border Systems Department (6813) provides systems engineering expertise to ensure the successful implementation of programs and projects that further critical national security missions in support of multiple National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) efforts. The department stewards Division 6000 capabilities applied to vital missions across the International, Homeland, and Nuclear Security Program Management Unit (PMU). The department's expertise is applied across the entire life-cycle of high-value asset security systems engineering program execution ¿ spanning planning, definition, research, development, analysis, implementation, control, and testing of systems and their components ¿ ultimately delivering innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce global proliferation and terrorism risks. Our current portfolio focuses on strengthening the global capability to deter, detect, and interdict illicit nuclear and radiological material crossing international borders, including airports, seaports, and land crossings. We work closely with NNSA, other national laboratories, domestic and foreign industry, facility operators, and foreign government officials. The department's key role is to lead systems engineering and integration activities to develop and deploy effective radiation detection systems at selected international border locations, and to perform systems-level acceptance testing. The department also leads and partners with other organizations at SNL to perform research and development for the Borders and Maritime Security subprogram in support of the Department of Homeland on a wide variety of topics. These topics include researching, developing, and implementing solutions to cargo security problems; optimizing operations at ports of entry; building, testing and implementing new methods and simulation tools to assess systems-level risk and evaluate the effectiveness of border and near-coastal security systems; enhancing situational awareness and guiding tactical operations and technology deployments; building new tools for detecting, tracking, and interdicting illegal border crossers; and supporting analyses for domestic nuclear detection efforts.
