We are seeking a creative and motivated R&D S&E Physicist with a passion for developing compact atom interferometers and related photonic device platforms to join our high\-performing and collaborative team as an R&D Scientist\.



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Work with a team of physicists and engineers to successfully advance the science of atom interferometers so they can be used as a practical sensing mechanism by overcoming challenges in physics and engineering\.

+ Develop emerging areas in other applications of atomic physics\.

+ Assist with development of proposals for funding\.



Required:



+ Ph\.D\. in Physics, or a closely related field plus 1 year of relevant experience\.

+ Undergraduate in STEM\.

+ Experience with atomic physics, diode laser systems, optics, vacuum systems, computer control, and/or automated data acquisition\.

+ Experimental and theoretical experience with the quantum manipulation of neutral atoms\.



Desired:



+ Experience with cold atom experiments such as Rydberg spectroscopy, nanowaveguide/nanofiber\-based atom\-light interaction, and atomic spin\-squeezing\.

+ Track record of collaboration across disciplines and organizational boundaries, and demonstrated skill in building successful teams in order to achieve multi\-disciplinary solutions to complex projects\.

+ Track record of successful research and development in atomic physics\.

+ Excellent collaboration skills for working in a team environment\.

+ Experience with laser stabilization and frequency modulation techniques\.

+ Experience with Matlab and LabView\.

+ Strong academic performance as evidenced by cumulative GPA\(s\) of 3\.2/4\.0 for each relevant undergraduate degree and 3\.5/4\.0 for each relevant graduate degree\.

The Physics\-Based Microsystems Department leverages a diverse capability set to provide science and technology products to enhance Sandias national security missions\. The department includes a broad set of expertise including atomic physics, micro\-optics, and electrochemistry and electroforming\. As part of the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications \(MESA\) facility, we provide solutions including atomic physics based sensors; atom and ion trapping devices and systems; unique diffractive, sub\-wavelength and micro\-optical components and systems; critical electrochemical materials processes; and unparalleled micro\-machined devices\. In addition to work for internal Sandia organizations, we have an established record of successful engagement with external customers\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
