Description: Description About the Position:
The role holder is responsible for the coordination and communication of National Grid’s new and revised safety programs. The purpose of the Corporate Industrial Hygienist function is to manage the Company wide IH program, standardize documentation, streamline communications, define and track metrics, and manage other key project management components to drive increased quality and operational efficiencies within Safety Programs. In doing so, the program manager will ensure safety criteria is reflected in organizational system design, equipment and procedures in line with industry best practice and regulatory compliance. Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Define and maintain standards of the industrial hygiene program project management process. Develop a pool of qualified industrial hygiene contractors and consultants that can be utilized for projects in all US operating areas. Continuously evaluate existing Industrial Hygiene programs and policies and such that they are maintained as current and accurate. Identify opportunities to streamline/consolidate written programs to eliminate redundancy. Perform and/or coordinate worksite inspections and evaluations, production methods, and engineering controls to determine potential health hazards associated with work place conditions. Perform and/or coordinate investigations of working conditions in places of employment for the prevention of occupational disease and industrial health hazards, with specific reference to asbestos, lead, silica, noise, and other harmful physical agents. Determines effectiveness of engineering control methods and makes recommendations regarding location, design, structure, operations, and maintenance of contaminant and physical agent control systems. Consult with all lines of business, employee representatives, union leaders and other agencies regarding industrial health problems and solutions. Keeps abreast of technology and current issues through seminars and training Maintains industrial hygiene records and prepares/analyzes reports and correspondence. Provide reports on progress, risks to delivery, and overall performance metrics for the industrial hygiene program management function. Keep all internal industrial hygiene sampling equipment calibrated and ready for deployment to the field. Challenge existing ways of working and continuously seek ways to do things better in order to drive greater efficiencies within the Industrial Hygiene and other Safety Program functions. Develop high level global initiatives in conjunction with UK colleagues and lead on the communication and coordination of their implementation in the US. This will usually involve championing their innovation through the use of pilots and service providers in order to test their validity across the business. Work with Learning & Development to ensure that the intention of regulatory guidelines are being interpreted correctly within employee training programs which will support change and innovation within National Grid.
Qualifications: 7+ years’ experience managing and coordinating industrial hygiene programs. Strong project management experience and expertise with strong working knowledge and experience in program management principles, tools and techniques. Knowledge of the fundamentals of chemistry, mathematics, physics, engineering and principles of industrial hygiene and work place hazards. Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal statutes and rules pertaining to industrial hygiene and work place. Strong background in the managing of asbestos, lead and silica programs. Knowledge of air sampling instruments and methods, ventilation testing equipment and measuring devices for noise and other physical agents. Ability to maintain records, and prepare/analyze various IH reports and correspondence. Possess excellent organizational and planning skills with the proven ability to manage multiple priorities and complex, major initiatives of significant scope, including unconventional projects. Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively both internally and externally to the organization; may include negotiation and presentation skills. Demonstrates the ability network internally and externally and to develop successful, long-lasting business partnerships with others and seeks to understand and challenge business scenarios to the benefit of all parties. Exhibit high personal standards of commitment and integrity Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related science/engineering field. Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation required.
