Principal Technical Leader - Cyber Security

Location: Palo Alto, CA

Job Description: 

The Power Delivery and Utilization (PDU) sector conducts a broad range of technology research for electric utilities related to the delivery of electricity.

This Principal Technical Leader position will technically lead and manage research projects to address the security technology challenges faced by utilities in several security areas such as incident response, threat management, identity and access management, and situational awareness. 

This position is also responsible for working directly with utility personnel, standards bodies, and technology companies to carry out research projects that have an impact on the industry.   

Job Functions:

  • Provides technical leadership and management for EPRI research projects associated with designing and implementing security technology solutions in an operations technology (OT) environment.  This includes implementing research solutions on power delivery systems in EPRI’s cyber security research laboratory. 
  • Monitors or participates in industry user forums, working groups and cyber security activities such as IEC TC57 WGs, IEEE, CIGRE, DNP User Group, etc.
  • As needed, identifies the most qualified internal resources and/or contractor team to assist with tasks. Selects contractors, frames statements of work, and directs the work of the team to assure technical and financial milestones are met.
  • Applies cyber security technical knowledge to industry issues, acquires input on needs from members, and identifies current and emerging technical issues.
  • Maintains cyber security technical expertise. Maintains/participates in/establishes good national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations.
  • Communicates cyber security strategies and results, written and verbal, to program membership and potential members through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops, and conferences. 
  • Provides assistance to the EPRI sales staff in Member and Technical Services and EPRI International.

Preferred Education: 

  • Technical or BS degree in Engineering or Sciences with a minimum of 10 years prior related experience or comparable work/educational experience in cyber security related to the electric sector. Individuals with advanced degrees may qualify with fewer years of work experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of prior experience related to cyber security for the electric sector.
  • Advanced degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering/Electric Engineering preferred.
  • Work experience at an electric utility or related contractor preferred.

Ideal Candidate: 

  • Background in cyber security technologies, strategies, and implementations for the electric sector.
  • Experience with current substation or field equipment vendors.
  • Experience in engaging directly with electric utilities on cyber security projects that include power delivery operations technology (transmission, distribution, and end user). 
  • Knowledge of DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, C37.118, or C12.22 preferred.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise IT security technologies, such as IDS/IPS, SIEM, and Threat Management systems preferred.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills. Solid computer skills and attention to detail are essential.  

EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
