This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

We are seeking postdoctoral appointments to conduct research and development toward piezoelectric and/or photonic MEMS technologies. We are interested in applicants with experience in either: (1) piezoelectric and/or photonics design, modeling, characterization, and/or integration, or (2) microfabrication, especially with aluminum nitride, lithium niobate, or III-V compound semiconductors.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Apply existing knowledge and gain new knowledge toward piezoelectric/photonic MEMS technologies.
+ Conduct research and publish.
+ Work in a team environment and contribute their knowledge to the team.
+ Interact with other scientists and engineers to solve technical problems.

This postdoctoral appointment is an opportunity to continue an engineer/scientist?s early career growth. The desired characteristics below represent both potential starting points and opportunities for growth in this position.

Required:



+ Ph.D. in physics or electrical engineering, or a related science or engineering discipline conferred within 5 years.

Desired:

+ Experience or knowledge of piezoelectric microsystems; chip-scale photonics; microfabrication and integration; and/or multiphysics finite element analysis tools.
+ Technical background and eagerness to learn new tools/techniques and to share knowledge with the team.
+ Adaptability to changing tasks and projects as needed.
+ Problem-solving skills to develop creative technical solutions.
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
+ Eagerness to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
+ The addition of diversity to the department through background, experience, interests, etc.



You will be part of the MEMS Technology Department (http://mems.sandia.gov/). We conduct research and development for advanced micro-electromechanical systems that push the technology envelope for national security applications.

Our broad R&D portfolio includes traditional MEMS sensors and actuators (e.g., inertial sensors and switches), piezoelectric devices (e.g., ultrasonic transducers), RF/acoustic devices (e.g., RF filters), opto/acoustic devices (e.g., optical modulators), magnetic and photovoltaic devices, and emerging technologies. We also develop and maintain a comprehensive set of MEMS fabrication processes in Sandia's MESA Silicon and Micro Fabs, where we build MEMS with traditional bulk and surface micromachining, piezoelectric films, damascene and electrodeposited metals, through substrate vias, wafer bonding, and other semiconductor fab processes.

MEMS is an interdisciplinary field. Security Clearance:


Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted L-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
