Job Title:Postdoctoral Appointee - Process and Performance Modeling of Additively Manufactured Materials and Structures

:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to support on-going research and development activities in metal-additive manufacturing.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

+ Development and application of the principles of solid and thermal mechanics and use of advanced computational finite-element methods
+ Working with a multidisciplinary team of material scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists
+ Promoting program visibility by maintaining an active publication record and participating in national and international scientific meetings

Required:



+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering or related field
+ Experience with metal-additive manufacturing to include techniques such as selective laser melting (SLM) or process and performance modeling of laser-based metal-additively manufactured materials and structures
+ Experience with one or more of the following:

- Solid mechanics including large deformation continuum mechanics
- Material mechanics including anisotropic elasticity, plasticity theory, material failure modeling including fracture mechanics
- Thermal mechanics including heat conduction, heat transfer, radiation, and solidification
- Multiscale material mechanics including knowledge of crystalline deformation mechanisms, grain-scale crystal plasticity, homogenization theory including RVE (representative volume element) analysis and self-consistent schemes
+ Experience with computational mechanics including nonlinear finite-element analysis
+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance

Desired:

+ Knowledge of x-ray computed tomography
+ Knowledge of thermal imaging
+ Experience in texture analysis in polycrystalline materials
+ Knowledge of residual-stress measurement techniques including diffraction and relaxation techniques
+ Knowledge of inverse modeling, topology optimization, and uncertainty quantification (UQ) techniques
+ Experience in use of commercial finite-element software such as Abaqus or Ansys
+ Experience with Python, C++, Matlab
+ Proficiency in Latex



The Solid Mechanics Department applies its expertise in computational solid mechanics to provide the best engineering solutions to our customers. A principal activity is the application of advanced computational mechanics finite-element programs, including SNL developed codes running on massively parallel computers. The department has expertise in complex material response, large deformation mechanics and system level analyses of quasi-static and transient dynamic events.

Security Clearance:


Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
