The Geotechnology & Engineering Org has a need for a Petroleum/Chemical/Mechanical Engineer to provide technical support for projects involving crude oil storage, processing, transportation, and testing\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Gather, analyze, and interpret thermodynamic and physical property data and present these findings in technical reports for a research study investigating crude oil properties relevant to storage, handling, and transportation safety;

+ To work within multi\-disciplinary teams and provide high\-quality technical analyses, reports, and communication products for the team and for the customer;

+ Organize and reduce a range of thermodynamic and physical property data for crude oils collected by Sandia relating to vapor pressure, composition, and properties associated with safety in handling, storage, and transportation;

+ Operate commercial process simulator model UNISIM to perform simulations of crude oil phase behavior and physical properties based on compositional and/or boiling point input data;

+ Assist with QA/QC monitoring on sample collection in the field and sample analysis in the laboratory\. May require some travel to field and/or laboratory sites in US and Canada;

+ Evaluate correlations and self\-consistency among crude oil properties \(vapor pressure, composition, pressure\-volume\-temperature\) derived from different sampling, analytical, and computational methods;

+ Co\-author technical reports and communication products across a variety of venues, to include internal project review/sponsor meetings, industry association meetings, technical conferences, publicly\-distributed Sandia research reports, and peer\-reviewed technical journals;

+ Utilize existing or develop new innovative methods to bridge gaps in capability or understanding in characterization of hydrocarbon fuels to improve safety in handling, transportation, and storage;

+ Participate in external committees and/or working groups to engage with other organizations including government agencies \(US DOE, US DOT, Transport Canada\) and industry groups \(e\.g\. American Petroleum Institute, Crude Oil Quality Association, Canadian Crude Quality Technical Association\) to leverage current knowledge and skills to provide effective solutions and apply best practices to technical problems that are common to all stakeholders;

+ Assist and/or lead development of proposals for new research that leverage capabilities at Sandia\.

_Must have the ability to travel to crude oil storage, processing, and testing facilities to oversee tests and communicate with field and laboratory personnel on purpose and intent of our work\._

+ PhD in Engineering \(Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental or Petroleum\), Chemistry, Physics or related discipline;

+ Ability to effectively communicate technical principles through written research reports as demonstrated through publications and verbal presentations at conferences;

+ Experience as a contributing member of a technical team that has defined customer needs, organized the work of the group, and delivered on commitments;

+ Experience with processing technical data or running numerical models using Excel, Matlab, Python, or equivalent\.

+ Experience measuring and/or modeling vapor pressure and properties of vapor\-liquid equilibrium systems;

+ Experience running process simulation models \(UNISIM, HYSYS or equivalent\);

+ Experience running Equation of State models;

+ Working experience in crude oil sampling and in testing environment or laboratory analytical chemistry;

+ Demonstrated ability to run numerical models \(in\-house or commercial\) to process technical data and provide clear, concise output that can be used for technical communications or further processing;

+ Willingness to run and modify legacy FORTRAN, VBA, and Excel tools to keep them running and modernize as\-needed;

+ Proficiency in one or more engineering programming languages \(FORTRAN, C\-languages, Visual Basic, VBA, Python\) with demonstrated ability to develop and/or modify source code to meet project requirements;

+ Demonstrated ability to participate in a team environment and meet group deliverables and timeline requirements;

+ Demonstrated ability to develop effective solutions to complex technical problems that have meaningful impact to the customer;

+ Demonstrated ability to conduct and complete research independently;

+ Knowledge of current oilfield tools and techniques for testing and confirming field\-based property measurements in wells and piping, including density, flow, pressure, temperature, and vapor pressure;

+ Project management experience\.

Department Description:

Supports Crude Oil Characterization for Transport Safety and the USDOE Strategic Petroleum Reserve through Science and Engineering\. For example, hydrocarbon methods testing, cavern monitoring and characterization, and the development of numerical codes to simulate cavern development and operation\.
