The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management?s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.

Sandia/California's Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to join a multidisciplinary team using recent advances in gene editing technology (CRISPR), Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), and materials science for development and characterization of novel in vivo CRISPR delivery platforms. The postdoctoral fellow will identify and optimize host-directed CRISPR constructs that enhance defense against biodefense-related bacterial pathogens in vitro; work with an engineering team to develop nanoparticle-based CRISPR delivery vehicles; and test nanoparticle delivery of the CRISPR constructs in mouse models of bacterial infection. The postdoctoral fellow will also be responsible for the effective communication of research results through publications and conference presentations.


Candidates must have a recent PhD degree in microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, materials science, or a related field. The successful candidate must be a strong individual contributor within a multidisciplinary team comprising biologists, chemists, engineers, and programmers, within the framework of a milestone-driven research project. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. A record of high technical achievement (e.g., as evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals), and demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research, are required.


Experience in the following areas is highly desired: Gene editing technology (e.g., CRISPR); high-throughput screening methods; NGS; fluorescence and confocal microscopy; flow cytometry and FACS; mammalian and bacterial cell culture at Biosafety Level 2 or higher; and animal models of infectious disease.

Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department, located in Livermore, California and Emeryville, CA, performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare and alternative energy. We are a diverse research group with a focus on both basic and applied biological research. We seek to address problems with strong ties to national security, such as biodefense and health security, through new research approaches and advanced technology development including microfluidics and nanofluidics. We also seek to develop the science base required by industry to produce clean, efficient, and cost-effective biofuels and other bioproducts on a commercial scale. This work is carried out in partnership with the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI). Our department is highly multidisciplinary, comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology (molecular biology, microbiology, virology, immunology and biochemistry), chemistry (analytical, organic and physical) and engineering (chemical, mechanical and biomedical).

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.
