This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to focus on mechanical property variability in additively-manufactured metals. New insights resulting from this work will relate materials behavior to component performance. This role provides an opportunity to work with a full array of material characterization equipment, and to collaborate with world-class experts in related fields including Digital Image Correlation, EBSD, micro CAT scanning, thermal-sprayed coating, nuclear weapon component design and analysis, pulsed-power and high energy density physics, nano sciences, and energy sciences.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Customize, operate, and analyze data output from a custom automated high-throughput tensile tester
+ Apply various image and data processing techniques to produce statistics of mechanical properties
+ Combine materials processing knowledge to provide recommendations for additional and/or complementary testing to provide clearer understanding of material properties and microstructural arrangements
+ Publish in high-impact journals and present at conferences

+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Materials Science & Engineering or related Science & Engineering fields
+ Background in metallurgy or digital image correlation
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE L clearance

+ Experience with experimental testing for structural properties of metals
+ Familiarity with additive manufacturing of metals and material behaviors
+ Experience with digital image correlation or metallurgy
+ Experience with programming for data analysis using Matlab, Python, or similar software
+ Experience with electron microscopy and crystallography, and electron backscatter diffraction
+ Knowledge of plasticity at microstructural length scales
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
+ A strong publication record
+ Working knowledge of computer modeling, simulation, and experimental validation
