The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management?s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.

We are seeking and energetic and independent scientist with expertise in metabolic engineering to join our team in the Biomass Science and Conversion Technologies Department. This individual will join a multi-national lab consortia working to establish an Agile Biofoundry that can rapidly optimize the production of biofuels and bioproducts. Primary responsibilities will entail designing metabolic pathways for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into bioproducts, introducing these pathways into bacteria or fungi, optimizing bioproduct production through host engineering, and bench-scale testing of bioproduct titers, rates, and yields.

Required:

Recent PhD in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemical Engineering, Enzymology, or related fields.

+ Between 3-5 years of experience with metabolic engineering of fungi and/or bacteria to produce bioproducts.
+ Background in molecular biology, including the ability to design and construct multi-gene expression systems, screen clone libraries, transformation, heterologous gene expression, gene knockouts, DNA, RNA and protein purification, and familiarity with analytical techniques used to quantify levels of enzymes and metabolites.
+ Strong personal, verbal and written communication skills
+ Demonstrated track record of publishing in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
+ Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments independently, maintain appropriate records and manage data.

Desired:

+ Familiarity with microbial deconstruction and metabolism of lignocellulose.
+ Familiarity with terpene and/or lipid biosynthetic pathways
+ Experience using bioinformatics tools to analyze genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic and proteomic datasets and use them to generate detailed metabolic maps.
+ Background in sugar metabolism and knowledge of analytical tools that utilize GC, LC, and mass spectrometry.
+ Familiarity and working knowledge of DOE biofuel programs.

The Biomass Science and Conversion Technology department is dedicated to developing and advancing innovative technologies for producing the next generation of biofuels. Our multidisciplinary staff represents a diverse range of backgrounds and skill sets: molecular biology, chemistry, chemical and biochemical engineering, biophysics, computational science, and biochemistry. We partner broadly with other Sandia departments as well as other national laboratories, industry, and universities to develop practical, science-based solutions to national energy goals. We also play an essential role in the DOE Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), one of three Bioenergy Research Centers in the Nation advancing the next generation of biofuel technologies.
