The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management?s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.

The Reacting Flow Research Department at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA, seeks a postdoctoral researcher who will use large eddy simulation (LES) to investigate geometrically complex turbulent reacting flows encountered in devices such as internal combustion engines, gas turbines, scramjets, and liquid rockets. The candidate will implement a highly specialized LES research code on massively parallel platforms, process the solutions, and analyze the results. Research will be strongly coupled with ongoing experiments at Sandia or elsewhere, and will be aimed at model development and validation for treatment of turbulent combustion processes in propulsion and power devices. Joint analysis of experimental and numerical data will also be performed to help identify and clarify relevant physical and chemical processes. Postdoctoral appointees work under the supervision of one or more research staff, typically in collaboration with other researchers at Sandia, other national laboratories, and in academia. Research programs are expected to result in impactful publications in major scientific journals and widespread recognition within the international scientific research community.


This position requires a PhD in engineering or the physical sciences, with a strong interest and expertise in the fields of turbulence, combustion, and the development of predictive models. Experience in performing numerical simulations with large-scale massively-parallel flow solvers is required. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a research team are also required.


Experience in the theory, development, and application of LES and related models is desirable, as is knowledge related to the algorithmic performance and operational characteristics of advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes, and experience in data processing and analysis, CFD code development (as it applies to multicore architectures and use of accelerators), and/or grid-generation (as it applies to the development of complex grids such as those for internal combustion engines).

Experimental and computational modeling studies of reacting flow phenomena relevant to combustion processes.

Security Clearance:
