We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher in the Geomechanics Department, Sandia National Laboratories, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The overall objective of the project is to develop an understanding of Thermal, Hydrological, Mechanical and Chemical (T-H-M-C) processes as applied to development of a damage model for subsurface storage of radioactive materials in rock.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Conduct experiments on characterization of T-M-H-C processes in a low porosity rock using flow-through high pressure and temperature apparatuses under various pressure, temperature, and stress conditions while detecting acoustic emissions and gas flow information;
+ Conduct observational characterization of deformed material using optical and scanning electron methods;
+ Analyze the above information in the context of and working with modelers in development of a damage model for rock;
+ Promote program visibility by maintaining an active publication record and by participating in national and international scientific meetings;
+ Work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional team environment.

Required:



+ PhD in Geomechanics or related field with experimental experience in rock mechanics and cognizance of safe laboratory practices;
+ Strong academic record and a demonstrated commitment to publication;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.

Desired:

+ Prior work experience in the field of Geomechanics;
+ Familiarity with high pressure experimental techniques, data analysis and interpretation, and observational methods;
+ Experience in teaming with modelers and field geologists;
+ Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional team environment.



The Geomechanics Department addresses cross-cutting issues in the geosciences and geoengineering related to rock mass characterization, rock mass mechanics, development of numerical codes and numerical simulations, validation of material models and design procedures, and rock mass site monitoring. Supported by combinations of laboratory work and in situ observations, the Geomechanics Department emphasizes: characterization of natural fracture systems; identification and modeling of rock deformation and failure processes; laboratory determinations of thermomechanical and transport properties of competent rock and natural fractures, including studies of coupled effects; extrapolation of laboratory measurements to field conditions; in situ stress measurements and evaluation of in situ boundary conditions; and laboratory and bench-scale validation studies.

Security Clearance:


Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted L-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
