Job Title:Postdoctoral Appointee - Experimental Solid Mechanics & Diagnostics


This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.


We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to support research efforts in experimental solid mechanics with an emphasis on full-field diagnostics.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

+ Supporting efforts covering the full spectrum of the research - development - applications domain
+ Supporting research efforts related to x-ray/NDE diagnostics development
+ Teaming with in-house high-fidelity multi-physics computational teams, data science experts, and engineers utilizing large-scale test systems
+ Working both independently and as part of our dynamic, multidisciplinary research team


+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Material Science, or Nuclear Engineering or a closely related discipline
+ Experience or academic focus in the area of experimental solid mechanics
+ Experience in a laboratory environment (e.g. use of mechanical test frames, cameras, detectors, electronics, and data acquisition systems)
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE L clearance


+ Evidence of high academic achievement
+ Experience with mechanics of materials research
+ Experience in optical and/or x-ray full-field diagnostics (e.g. digital image correlation, digital volume correlation, interferometry, computed tomography)
+ Experience with Matlab and image processing software
+ Ability to work independently and integrate effectively into a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment
+ Good interpersonal, organization, and communication skills (both oral and written), as evidenced by a strong publication and presentation record
+ Commitment to engineering excellence and continuous improvement, including a dedication to performing high quality work safely
+ Demonstrated leadership skills and experience working in a collaborative environment within a multidisciplinary team

Our team consists of engineers specializing in experimental solid mechanics and x-ray diagnostics interfacing closely with computational solid mechanicians and data science experts. The team operates within the Experimental Mechanics and Dynamics Group (1520), which conceives, constructs, and uses experimental platforms and diagnostics to obtain accurate and reproducible data in mission- relevant normal and abnormal mechanical environments through environmental and nondestructive testing of components and systems for design, development, qualification, and simulation model validation. The team supports a broad range of customers through design support, environment simulation and diagnostics, qualification activities, field testing, and engineering discovery.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted L-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
