The Energy Innovation Department at Sandia/CA seeks to hire a postdoctoral appointee with experience in experimental materials science and plasma physics\. The position will support Sandias magnetic fusion energy program, which focuses on plasma\-materials interactions, the design of plasma\-facing components, and the development of edge plasma diagnostics\. Depending on the applicants prior background, the position could also involve collaborating with a team of researchers focusing on Sandias hydrogen energy programs, including studies of metal hydrides for fuel cell electric vehicles, and hydrogen effects on structural materials\.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

+ Develop in\-situ and in\-vacuum characterization techniques to the probe the response of surfaces to high\-flux hydrogen and helium plasmas, including optical spectroscopies and forms of ion beam analysis \(e\.g\. medium energy ion channeling\);

+ Study hydrogen transport through materials using thermal desorption spectroscopy and gas\-driven permeation;

+ Characterize the chemical interactions of hydrogen with interfaces using surface science techniques such as low energy ion scattering, and infrared absorption spectroscopy \(IRAS\);

+ Lead independent projects and collaborate with colleagues at U\.C\. San Diego, University of Tennessee, U\.C\. Berkeley, as well as at the national laboratories;

+ Mentor undergraduate summer interns and graduate students;

+ Present at conferences and communicate results in peer\-reviewed literature\.


+ PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Solid\-State Physics, Physical Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or related field;

+ Research background in experimental materials science, surface science, or plasma physics;

+ Ability to develop independent research projects, as demonstrated by record of publication in peer\-reviewed literature;

+ Proficient communication skills, demonstrated through presentations at technical conferences, and/or teaching lectures\.


+ Hands\-on experience in ultra\-high vacuum systems, plasma diagnostics, and/or low and medium energy ion beam techniques;

+ Research background in hydrogen surface interactions and/or hydrogen effects on materials;

+ Experience with theory and modeling of surface chemical reactions;

+ Familiarity with LabView, Mathematica, Python, C, Fortran as well as the Linux operating environment\.

Department Description:

The Energy Innovation Department is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers working on fundamental scientific research and technology development that support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions\. This work encompasses diverse set of topics, including the development of hydrogen as a practical clean fuel source, novel approaches to thermal management, as well as plasma\-materials interactions for magnetic fusion energy\. Projects range from the surface science of hydrogen storage materials to more applied engineering of hydrogen energy infrastructure\. The department also leads complementary hydrogen\-in\-materials research supported by DOEs Office of Fusion Energy Sciences\. This work spans the breadth of basic plasma studies to major efforts in the plasma\-material interactions and fusion nuclear science\. Members of our team also invented the Sandia Cooler \(recipient of R&D 100 award\) and have demonstrated its utility for high\-power solid\-state lighting and other applications, as well as TwistactTM which can improve electrical power handling in large wind turbines\.

More broadly, the Energy Innovation Department is part of the Chemistry, Materials, and Combustion Center at Sandia/California\. This center is home to much of the materials science research at the laboratory, and includes a variety of world\-class surface science and microscopy capabilities\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.
