This role provides access to world\-class computational resources and expertise as part of a multi\-disciplinary team that is developing high\-fidelity, multi\-physics codes for solving tightly\-coupled problems for a range of different projects\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Apply computational tools to develop molecular, macrokinetic and thermodynamic models for reaction of polymeric materials under heating and shock

+ Work closely with a variety of organizations in defining the scope, methods and outputs of these investigations, to include collaboration with experimentalists to validate the material and physics models

+ Publish results in journals and scientific conferences

Required:

+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Physics, Materials Science, Applied Mathematics or a related field

+ Experience in computational techniques for molecular\-scale investigations \(e\.g\., molecular dynamics, density functional theory\), numerical modeling of complex systems of chemical reactions, or related numerical techniques

+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Desired:

+ Experience demonstrating teamwork and positive customer interactions

Department Description:

The prime work of the Radiation Effects Research Department \(1344\) is within the Radiation Effects Sciences \(RES\) program which spans research, development, and application in the field of radiation hardening design and qualification\. All radiation effects from nuclear detonations \(x rays, gamma rays, neutrons, electromagnetic pulse, etc\.\), natural and enhanced space environments, and in situ radiation are included\.

Within the RES program the Radiation Effects Research Department has a central role in transient radiation effects in electronics and optoelectronics, and major responsibility for mechanical response of materials and components, including thermal, structural, and shock responses\. Work includes developing x\-ray and electron beam sources for electrical and mechanical response experiments and other RES program needs; developing and implementing radiation and material response diagnostics and instrumentation; conducting phenomenological electrical and material response discovery experiments; obtaining electrical and material properties for computational model input; and measuring electrical and material responses for model validation\. Additionally, a major role for the department is to provide design consultation and qualification assessment of nuclear weapon hardware to Sandia's system, component design, and production groups\.
