We are seeking Lab Support Technologists to perform and support nondestructive experimental and research activities and laboratory operations in the Non\-Destructive Environments and Diagnostics Department\. Responsibilities include the application of non\-destructive evaluation \(NDE\) technologies to characterize internal component defects/flaws/anomalies/features, determine material properties, analyze failures, etc\. In addition to NDE applications, responsibilities also include support of research efforts by technical staff\. Overall responsibility includes facility operations, such as performing preventative, routine, and corrective maintenance for numerous systems, facility oversight and maintenance\. This position will require work with explosives, classified material, documents, electronic media, and will have other operational responsibilities \(Work Planning & Control \(WP&C\) and Environmental Safety & Health \(ES&H\) documents\)\. Candidates for this position should have a strong technical background and aptitude for NDE data acquisition, analysis and processing with state of the art equipment and software\. Secondary responsibilities will include test support for other facilities in this department including the Radiography Lab\. Additinal responsibilities that are shared with other facility personnel are: creating and maintaining safety documentation and Technical Work Documents\.



Our department is part of the Engineering Sciences Center, which is the steward of engineering mechanics for Sandia National Laboratories\. Our department specializes in experimental technologies related to non\-destructive evaluation and radiography\. With our state of the art experimental technologies, technical expertise, and analytical capabilities in sister departments, we provide integrated customer solutions\. Our mission is to support fundamental research, development, model validation, qualification and acceptance for nuclear weapons, satellites, national missile defense, and other applications\.



Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:



+ Conduct a wide array of experiments using non\-destructive evaluation techniques to assist scientists and engineers to support current mission areas and help develop test capabilities for future needs

+ Install, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment including instrumentation and data acquisition systems and software

+ Develop knowledge of laboratory equipment to recognize malfunctions and make corrections

+ Conceptualize and communicate major elements of experimental design and results and to represent to other staff, management, and visitors, the scientific and engineering principles being investigated or developed

+ Investigate anomalies and recommend alternative solutions to problems

+ Write operating procedures, analysis methods, and laboratory procedures

+ Implement and adhere to rigorous work planning and control processes to assure safe, secure, and high\-quality operations and results



Required:



+ Associates degree in a technical field

+ Detailed knowledge of NDE techniques \(e\.g\.ultrasonics, eddy current, penetrant, radiography, magnetic particle\)

+ Experience with the application of NDE techniques

+ Experience working with current industrial NDE equipment

+ Understanding of the scientific method and experimental procedures

+ Experience with basic laboratory test equipment, including data acquisition equipment, and instrumentation

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-clearance



Desired:



+ BS degree in an engineering/mathematics field

+ Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret various physical, civil or structural, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics

+ Demonstrated analytical and computer skills

+ Experience working with hazardous and materials

+ Familiarity with advanced GPU\-based computer hardware

+ Demonstrated commitment to operational safety, security and quality

+ Ability to work in an experimental facility and perform field operations

+ Ability to travel on occasion to support customer and program needs

+ Experience maintaining and troubleshooting industrial equipment

+ Experience with data visualization

+ Exposure to coding in Python/Matlab and LabView

+ Experience with work instructions and laboratory operating procedures

+ Experience with work planning and controls processes

+ Experience with high consequence safety operations, including explosive and radioactive related processes

+ Ability to interpret, organize, and document experimental results

+ Ability to write clear and concise reports of inspection results

+ Ability to work independently with minimal guidance and collaboratively as part of a team

+ Experience with computer aided drafting for test fixture design

+ Experience with mathematical modeling and computer simulation

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills

+ Active DOE Q clearance



Department Description:



The Non\-Destructive Environments & Diagnostics Department \(1529\) consists of radiography, nondestructive evaluation \(NDE\), climate simulation for normal, abnormal, and aging environments, and inertial environments\. Deliverables span the full Research\-Development\-Application spectrum for all the Laboratories Missions with a focus on Nuclear Weapon components throughout the stockpile lifecycle\. The department lies within the Experimental Mechanics and Dynamics Group \(1520\), which conceives, constructs, and uses experimental platforms and diagnostics to obtain accurate and reproducible data in mission relevant normal and abnormal mechanical environments\. This work is accomplished thorough environmental and nondestructive testing of components and systems for design, development, qualification, and simulation model validation\. The team supports a broad range of customers through design support, environment simulation and diagnostics, qualification activities, field testing, and engineering discovery\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
