Our team seeks a Process Engineer to be part of the MESA fab team as a Thin Film process and development engineer\.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

+ Support the maintenance of established processes for CMOS, micromachining, and compound semiconductor technologies\.

+ Develop new processes in support of new technologies\.

+ Specify, order, install, and characterize new process tools\.

+ Implement routine procedures and maintain Statistical Process Controls \(SPC\) for established processes/tools\.

+ Provide process insight and expertise to insure manufacturability in the definition of new products and technologies\.

+ Train or coordinate the training of new and seasoned operations and maintenance technicians\.

+ Lead daily processing activities to ensure processes and equipment are stable and operational\.

+ Generate and maintain operating and maintenance procedures\.

+ Develop and monitor the appropriate performance metrics and preventative maintenance plans\.


+ Requires a Bachelors in STEM and an advanced degree \(Masters or PhD\.\) in an engineering, science, or physics discipline plus two or more years experience;

+ Experience in semiconductor fabrication processes such as photolithography, wet/dry etch, thin films deposition, metrology, etc\. at an engineering level\.

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance\.


+ PhD in Electrical, Chemical, Materials, or Mechanical Engineering, or in Applied Science\.

+ Experience with Metal Deposition processes including Physical Vapor Deposition \(PVD\) and sputtering\.

+ Experience with thin film deposition process characterization and development\.\.

+ Knowledge of design of experiments, SPC, and semiconductor physics\.

+ Programming and data retrieval experience would be beneficial\.

+ Excellent interpersonal communications skills and ability to work well in a teaming environment to develop strong relationships\.

+ Ability to present data in a clear, concise way\.

Department Description:

Sandia National Laboratories Microsystems and Engineering Sciences Applications \(MESA\) complex provides unique processing capability in semiconductor microfabrication\. The MESAFab Operations departments develop and maintain core semiconductor processing capabilities and capacity that enable our customers to build differentiating Microsystems products\. Two unique facilities are co\-located within the 65,000 square foot MESAFab complex including: \(1\) a 12,000 square foot Class 1 Silicon Fab for 6\-inch silicon wafer processing and \(2\) a 15,000 square foot Class 10 and Class 100 MicroFab for compound semiconductor material processing and silicon wafer post\-processing\. Key microfabrication processing areas include photolithography, reactive ion etch, wet etch/clean, oxidation and diffusion, thin films, CMP \(planarization\), ion implantation, metrology, deep reactive silicon ion etch, wafer bonding and thinning, electroplating, packaging, MEMS release, yield learning and statistical process control\.

The Silicon Fab has processing expertise in both CMOS and MEMS technologies\. Over 150 equipment sets are maintained, supported and operated 24 hours per day, 5 days a week \(3 shifts\)\. Both processing and maintenance expertise are staffed on all 3 shifts\. We offer unique prototyping capabilities, are capable of producing full flow production lots with quick turnaround time, and perform flexible process development\. The MicroFab has expertise in compound semiconductor material processing\. All of the MicroFab equipment \(180 tools\) are maintained and supported by our in\-house maintenance and technical staff\. We are capable of producing highly customized, low\-volume production or prototyping devices and have flexible processing capabilities\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
