We are seeking a Mechanical Technologist

This position will provide much needed explosive range operations support\. This will include, but is not limited, to the handling, transportation and assembly of explosive tools and test articles\. Ad Hoc support of explosive tests, design and fabrication of test articles, test stands, charge holders and other miscellaneous test support fabrication activities\. Support of the departments ES&H compliance activities such as burn and /or dig permits, chemical inventory, explosive inventory system, hoisting and rigging inspections, etc\.


Demonstrated experience working on an explosive research and development range\. Includes experience in transporting, handling, and assembly of explosive test articles and components\.

Demonstrated ability to make independent design decisions based on an engineers test plan and guidance to fabricate and/or modify a wide range of test articles such as camera boxes, test stands, explosive targets and fixtures\.

Working knowledge of Sandias ES&H processes\. This includes experience in areas such as; hoisting and rigging, dig and burn permits, reapplication, solid and hazardous waste streams, chemical inventory, Explosive Inventory Systems, lockout/tagout, fall protection, etc\.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance\.


Ability to fabricate and/or modify equipment for the development of rapid prototype test articles, targets, and setup\.

Excellent verbal, written, planning, and interpersonal skills demonstrated by past work\.

Ability to work on a dynamic and highly motivated team in support shifting and evolving requirements and due dates\. This includes the ability to work flexible hours with periodic overtime\.

Department Description:

Department 6647, Energetic Systems Research, conducts focused research in shock physics combined with a comprehensive understanding and analysis of energetic material to develop applications and solutions for DOE, DOD and other US government customers in a direct and timely manner\. The department develops, improves, and fields leading\-edge modeling capabilities for shock physics and energetic events\. The department?s core mission also includes the design and fielding of render safe tools for critical national missions, advanced EOD energetic render safe tools, advanced energetic breaching tools, and the characterization of energetic material behaviors\. Department 5437 also provides energetics, instrumentation and test operations support for selected SNL and WFO customers\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
