Our Landing Systems Business Unit headquartered in Troy, Ohio designs, tests and manufactures a wide range of fully integrated landing systems. As part of Landing Systems, our Landing Gear business is one of the largest suppliers of integrated landing gear systems in the world and has built its reputation on performance and innovation. The company provides landing gear for a wide range of commercial, regional, military and business aircraft applications, outfitting aircraft from most of the world’s major airframers.

A continuing focus on the use of lighter-weight materials, more electric technologies and increasingly robust systems, will help secure Landing Gear’s position as the preferred choice for new aircraft applications worldwide.

As a result of growth we are looking to add a Mechanical Systems Engineer to our highly skilled Landing Gear New Product Design & Development team. This position is based at our Landing Gear Business Office in Independence, OH.

The duties & responsibilities of this role include:

  • Provide technical leadership for all electro/hydro-mechanical systems related tasks for the project assigned.
  • Develop system specifications/requirements for Landing Gear Controls, Steering, Actuation and other associated systems based on: customer, regulatory, industry, military and internally derived requirements in support of procurement activities.
  • Develop interface definition with other aircraft electrical and hydraulic systems and sub systems.
  • Prepare, check and/or approve the specifications for electrical and hydraulic mechanical systems including but not limited to interconnecting electrical wiring, electro/hydro mechanical motors and hydraulic hoses/tubes/fittings, and electronic control systems.
  • Prepare, check and/or approve qualification and certification test plans / procedures for systems and their components, including software certification.
  • Management of customer requirements through integration with the engineering IPT.
  • Development and management of derived requirements through integration with the engineering IPT.
  • Development and maintenance of customer/supplier compliance status.
  • Support of the verification and validation matrix to ensure appropriate engineering substantiation for both customer and internal requirements
  • Support hardware buy vs. build trade-off analysis in design development and support supplier selection.
  • Interface with Customers and Suppliers on a regular basis supporting the system definition and reviews through all development phases.
  • Witness testing and support systems integration on test rigs, avionics test bench and flight test as required.
  • Develop and/or approve qualification substantiation of electrical and hydraulic systems and appropriate sub-components to support compliance by analysis.
  • Prepare, check and/or approve the systems/design compliance documentation.
  • Work closely with the Reliability, Maintainability and Safety group in developing reliability predictions, FMEA's, FTA's, (Preliminary) Systems Safety Analysis (PSSA/SSA), including reliability demonstration test plans as required.
  • Systems Integrator for actuation (gear retraction, steering), wheels/tires/brakes and other associated systems.
  • Responsible for electrical dressing and hydraulic routings deliverables per program schedule.
  • Support the Test Lab in development / procurement of related test equipment.
  • Support R&D activities and prototype development of electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical components and systems.
  • May perform other duties as assigned or apparent.
  • Occasional travel between customer/suppliers and UTAS locations. Long term assignments may be required during the joint definition phases for new programs.


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following combination of education and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical / mechanical systems and electrical / mechanical components testing and certification. Aerospace Experience Preferred.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Prior use of PDM system (i.e. SmarTeam, MatrixOne, Team Center)
  • Proficient at using computing tools and programs including MS Office, Windows
  • Possess UTAS-LS Enterprise Values including Ethical Behavior, Customer Focused Improvement, Accountability & Teamwork and Openness & Trust
  • Must be able to verify U.S. Person Status as defined by International Traffic & Arms Regulations (ITAR)

The following experience for this role is strongly preferred:
  • Strong understanding of electro-mechanical / hydro-mechanical components used in Landing Gear Systems is preferred.
  • Knowledge of FAA/EASA, industry (RTCA, SAE, ARINC, etc.) and military requirements / specifications.
  • History of successful product system integration activities.
  • Strong desire to drive / lead projects.
  • Capable of working simultaneously on multiple assignments.
  • Experience working within a team oriented organization.
  • Working knowledge of DOORS
  • Proficient in CATIA V5
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
