We are seeking a highly motivated, high\-performing materials scientist to perform cutting\-edge research and development on materials and components for national security applications\. This position offers the opportunity to work with leading scientists and engineers in materials science in a state\-of\-the art experimental facility, with a strong focus on scientific development to improve understanding of structural metals\. A large portion of current work is in the development and characterization of metals and processes for additive manufacturing \(AM\)/3D printing of load\-bearing/structural parts\. The Department uses state\-of\-the art equipment and technology for materials mechanics characterization, such as a high\-resolution Electron Back\-Scatter Diffraction technique for measuring residual stress, strain and dislocations\. Other work on AM metals includes quantifying shape distortion, residual stress, strength, ductility, and surface finish\. Another significant portion of the job will be consultation with engineers on additively manufactured and conventional components\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work with researchers from diverse backgrounds to design and perform laboratory experiments

+ Analyze data in Matlab, Minitab, Excel, and other specialized scientific software

+ Advise design engineers on appropriate materials, geometry, etc\. for a given application

+ Develop experiments for model inputs and validation

+ Contribute to publications in peer\-reviewed journals and present in scientific forums

+ PhD in Materials Science or Materials Engineering, or a closely related field

+ Experience with materials science and structural behavior of metals

+ Experience with experimental techniques for measuring structural properties and microstructural characterization

+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

+ Experience with mechanical testing, for example, familiarity with load frames such as the MTS system

+ Familiarity with Electron Back\-Scatter Diffraction \(EBSD\) analysis, secondary and transmission electron imaging, and other microscale and crystallographic techniques

+ Experience in high\-temperature mechanical property measurements and analysis

+ Experience with Digital Image Correlation

+ An understanding of material mechanics including stress tensors, plasticity, rate effects, etc\.

Department Description:

The Materials Mechanics and Tribology Department supports mission areas including Nuclear Weapons, Defense Systems, Energy, and Biological Sciences\. The department provides its customers with:

+ Solutions to problems involving mechanical properties of materials, both bulk properties and surface or tribological properties

+ Relationships and dependencies among materials structures, composition, properties, performance, reliability and service environments

+ Diagnostics and modeling that enable deep scientific investigations of material behavior and prevention of failure

+ Scientific discovery and peer\-reviewed publications on material mechanics and tribology\.
