We are seeking a Manager, R&D Science and Engineering to lead the Weapon Engineering Professional Development \(WEPD\) Department\. The WEPD Department \(2236\) executes multiple functions that enable the Office of the Nuclear Weapon Chief Engineer to assure the NW enterprise workforce has the requisite technical knowledge to perform their work with confidence, consistency and robustness\. This is accomplished through a series of activities including:

+ NW\-specific educational training courses and curricula \(including the Weapon Intern Program and Essential Topics for NW Managers\)

+ NW knowledge capture, preservation and curation, and

+ Research, training and disposition in the NW Legacy Hardware Laboratory \(NWLHL, Bldg\. 867\)

2230 is seeking a leader with passion for the NW mission and training and education who will partner across the laboratory to bring new and creative approaches to training and educating an evolving NW enterprise workforce\. The selected applicant must have the ability to travel domestically and internationally\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Oversee, lead, and mentor the diverse members of the workforce within the department \(including matrix and represented personnel\), the senior mentor consultants, and the numerous long\-term visitors to the department

+ Oversee extensive travel for staff

+ Engage technically and programmatically across the department to understand, effectively lead, and represent the NW knowledge management work being conducted

+ Cultivate successful relationships with key US government sponsors, AWE, DOD, and all the National Security Enterprise sites

+ Develop new program and project areas based on existing and new department capabilities and NW needs

+ Create opportunities for members of the workforce to develop new ideas and initiatives and continuously improve the departments products

+ Coordinate employee recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, work assignments and oversee the departments budget

+ Work with the Center 2200 management team to develop a coherent strategy, a collaborative work environment, and opportunities to leverage capabilities


+ Bachelors and advanced degree \(Masters or PhD\) in engineering, physics, or other relevant STEM discipline

+ Eight years of relevant experience, including two or more years of leadership experience

+ Five years experience in Nuclear Weapons

+ Active US DOE Q security clearance with S15 or ability to obtain S15


+ Broad knowledge of NW systems programs

+ Experience in engaging with upper level management \(in the US government and/or the laboratory\)

+ Knowledge and demonstrated leadership characteristics relating to delivering results, building effective relationships, modeling personal excellence, demonstrating accountability and energizing a team to perform

+ Ability to analyze complex problems and provide solutions; excel at providing a concise analysis of an idea or potential solution

+ Ability to challenge others thinking

+ Knowledge and/or experience with NW training

+ Knowledge and or experience with NW knowledge preservation

+ Familiarity or experience with the Weapon Intern Program

+ Familiar with knowledge preservation/management tools and processes

+ Strong interest in the capture and distribution of unique NW knowledge represented by classified hardware

+ Experience working with AWE through JOWOGs

+ Experience with managing large classified holding of both documents and hardware

+ Experience managing Activity Level Work

+ Experience working through conflict

+ Excellent communication, analytical, and teaming skills

+ Demonstrated ability to develop, grow and manage both customer funded and indirect projects/program

+ Passion to foster the development of the department as the Nuclear Weapon Knowledge Management Center of Excellence and to facilitate the transfer of this knowledge to the workforce

Department Description:

The Stockpile Test and Support Group plays a key role in sustaining the nuclear deterrent by enabling military operations; ensuring delivery platform compatibility; developing the workforce and preserving knowledge; preparing for nuclear weapon related accidents/incidents; creating 3\-D printed prototypes; managing and ensuring the integrity of weapon development and production data through common configuration management tools and resources; and providing mechanical design support for Use Control and Test Equipment\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance to start\.
