We are seeking a Manager, R&D Science and Engineering

An opening exists for an R & D Technical Manager to lead and support the diverse and high\-performing staff of the Energetics Systems Research department, SNL department 6647\. The manager will lead the development of strategy and vision for the department in collaboration with the department personnel and the 6600 leadership team, to build on their current strengths and expand the departments Research & Development and explosives operations portfolio\. The manager will work with department personnel and colleagues to develop, maintain, and, when necessary, improve customer relationships, develop proposals, and oversee project execution to ensure success and customer satisfaction\. Fostering career development, hiring exceptional personnel, and, in general, placing a high priority on the welfare of the department personnel and core capabilities are nonnegotiable expectations\. The selected manager will also be expected to work collaboratively across Sandia, and seek opportunities for the department to broaden their impact beyond the current set of internal and external customers\. The department's work involves laboratory facilities and test site activities that encompass explosive operations\. The manager will maintain and assure appropriate ES&H and Security processes, procedures, and behaviors are in place and continually practiced\. Minor to moderate travel will be needed to support these objectives\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Ensure that all operations \(i\.e\. training exercises, explosive tests, high\-voltage work\) are conducted safely and in compliance with Sandias policies including the Work Planning and Control \(WP&C\) process

+ Develop and articulate a vision for the future of the capabilities in close partnership with group management and our primary customers

+ Develop, hire, and support the careers of the Thunder Range team

+ Be the Thunder Range site point of contact for the Coyote Test Field Capabilities Infrastructure Improvement Plan \(CIIP\)

+ Maintain the existing close relationship with our existing customers

+ Work with the program offices to ensure adequate and timely funding is available to accomplish and maintain the mission of the department\.

+ Provide management oversight of field work, including explosive testing

+ Perform the day\-to\-day management duties in support of the departments mechanical and electrical fabrication facilities

+ Ensure that staff are trained, qualified and capable of performing a variety of hazardous operations required at the site

+ Partner with other departments to support the wider mission of the Explosive Systems and Technologies Group\.

+ Advance the state\-of\-the art in render\-safe and stabilization training through the constant evolution of course content and knowledge of real\-world threats\.


+ Bachelor and Masters of Science degree in relevant STEM discipline, or a bachelors and a doctorate in a relevant STEM discipline\. Must also have eight or more years of relevant technical experience\. Bachelors in STEM plus 4 years related experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree\.

+ Experience with Sandias Work Planning and Control process or similar WP&C processes if applying externally

+ Experience managing complex projects to include oversight of fabrication activities, test setup & execution, operations, etc\.

+ Ability to obtain and maintain additional clearances, which may require a polygraph test


+ Masters of Science degree in a STEM discipline or equivalent experience

+ Experience managing a department or projects with explosive, electrical, mechanical, and field operations hazards

+ Experience managing field test and explosive operations

+ Active and ability to maintain a required US DOE Q security clearance

+ Analytical skills in understanding customer requirements and development work packages in support of their needs and expectations

+ Experience working with classified matter and material

+ Demonstrated experience in supporting the Joint Technical Operations Team, EOD teams, and similar organizations

+ Demonstrated experience working with Strategic Partnership Projects \(SPP\)

+ Strong written and verbal communication skills

+ Track record on delivery on complex projects and programs\.

Department Description:

Department 6647, Energetic Systems Research, conducts focused research in shock physics combined with a comprehensive understanding and analysis of energetic material to develop applications and solutions for DOE, DOD and other US government customers in a direct and timely manner\. The department develops, improves, and fields leading\-edge modeling capabilities for shock physics and energetic events\. The department?s core mission also includes the design and fielding of render safe tools for critical national missions, advanced EOD energetic render safe tools, advanced energetic breaching tools, and the characterization of energetic material behaviors\. Department 6647 also provides energetics, instrumentation and test operations support for selected SNL and WFO customers\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
