The position reports to the Operations Controller, who has overall books close and financial reporting responsibility for Covanta’s North Americas facility operations through a network of Regional Accounting Directors and their teams.  

The successful candidate will support the Operations Controller primarily on strategic issues affecting facility operations accounting.  The work includes results and trends analysis, ad hoc analyses, bringing efficiencies to common operations accounting tasks that may be capable of automation or improvement, researching accounting topics for complex transactions and writing position papers to document conclusions and assisting in new business acquisitions and integration.

Other aspects of the role include assisting the Operations Controller with, SOX compliance, refining the quarterly balance sheet review process, implementing audit process efficiencies and providing input to the company’s 10Q/K. The role has potential future growth into a Regional Accounting Director role or other Finance leadership roles.

The ideal candidate is a driven lateral thinker and CPA who has worked in a public company environment, with line accounting, analytical and technical accounting experience in their list of accomplishments.



  • Bachelors degree required, CPA or equivalent preferred
  • 7 plus years of experience; ideally at least 3 years of public accounting and the remainder in industry
  • Very strong analytical skills
  • Pride of  ownership of work
  • Ability to work independently and follow tasks through to completion
  • Essbase/Longview type experience required
  • ERP a must, PeopleSoft preferred
  • Should have had controller/assistant controller experience
  • Experience with month-end close process
  • Clear communicator with strong presentation skills
