The Client

 Our client is a world-class manufacturer of consumer products with multiple facilities spread across the U.S. Our search position is with a significant manufacturing complex in the U.S. South. 

The Position and Responsibilities 

The Manager of Maintenance & Reliability reports to the Mill Manager/Vice President of Operations for this complex. Direct reports to the Manager of Maintenance & Reliability include three Area Maintenance Leaders, a Reliability Engineering Group, and Maintenance Planning. There are some 160 hourly and 20 salaried employees. The hourly employees are members of a bargaining unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for the long range planning and development of strategies for reliability improvements for the facility and will oversee and be responsible for improving the facility’s manufacturing performance by reducing machine downtime and unscheduled maintenance through improved equipment reliability and managing an effective preventative maintenance program. Value creation and continuous improvement is expected as a result of utilizing process tools and knowledge of system capabilities such as: 
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Mitigation.
  • Planning and Scheduling best practices.
  • Reliability Centered Maintenance concepts and practices.
  • Predictive, Preventive and Precision Maintenance concepts and practices.
  • Outage Management best practices.
  • Leadership Effectiveness and Performance Management best practices.
  • Adult Learning and Capability Building best practices.
  • Financial Planning tools for multi-year maintenance expenditures and capital improvements.
  • Precision work execution.
  Specific responsibilities include:
  • Environmental, Health, Safety, regulatory and internal guideline compliance in all activities of the maintenance and reliability department.
  • Identification and mitigation of department’s highest safety risks.
  • Maintain and secure all plant assets, which include all buildings and grounds.
  • Evaluate reliability gaps in organization and lead others in developing action plans.
  • Effective cost management of department expenses.
  • Track and report on capital and reliability improvement trends.
  • Incorporation of maintenance and reliability practices into capital project scoping.
  • Leading, developing and holding a staff of maintenance technicians and maintenance leadership accountable for the safe operations of the facility.
  • Direction of the supervision of all plant maintenance functions involving equipment, buildings, systems and grounds to include electrical/instrument, mechanical, plumbing, pipe fitting, and welding.
  • Assessing, developing, and managing the performance of Area Maintenance Leaders and their Performance Leaders, Planners and Technicians.
  • Takes ownership of the results of the people, processes, and equipment that impact the reliability of the operation while fully utilizing the maintenance resources.
  • Implementation of maintenance and reliability improvements to keep current with technology and best practices in the industry.
  • Working with operations leaders to ensure that the equipment meets required specifications and to ensure equipment/asset availability that will best meet customer requirements.
  • Optimizing and sustaining a predictive and preventive maintenance program.
  • Optimization of maintenance work order planning and scheduling.
  • Assessing and improving talent in the maintenance and reliability department.
  • Managing and documenting training for the entire maintenance staff to meet all safety and compliance requirements.
  • Development of annual maintenance financial plan.
  • Develop and implement plans to improve overall maintenance cost by reduction of downtime, elimination of recurring failures and implementation of equipment upgrades/fixes.
  • Developing cohesive teams between the operations and maintenance groups to improve reliability.
  • Use of analytical thinking, problem solution and root cause analysis skills throughout the performance of duties.
Ideal Professional Background 

The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in Engineering and a minimum of five years of supervisory experience in maintenance and/or reliability in an industrial/manufacturing environment. Experience should include: 
  • Programming Logic Controller (PLC).
  • Maintenance Department Budgeting.
  • Root Cause Analysis and Reliability Maintenance tools.
  • Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Maintenance and reliability concepts such as planning and scheduling, preventive and predictive maintenance, shutdown/turnaround management, mechanical integrity, and project checkout and startup.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Software: Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Project.
 Ideal Personal Background 

The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communications skills, presentation skills, interpersonal skills, relationship building skills, the ability to influence others and drive cultural change, and the ability to work at all levels in an organization. He/she must have strong planning, organizational, and management skills. The successful candidate must be self-directed and detail oriented with high energy and a sense of urgency to achieve results.   He/she will be able to think strategically, develop plans that will provide long-term benefits to the organization, and efficiently manage several diverse tasks at the same time. Finally, the successful candidate must be results-oriented and have the presence, demeanor, and confidence to be a member of the senior leadership team of this manufacturing complex.
