We are seeking a Manager, R&D Science and Engineering tosteward a range of capabilities spanning Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) across multiple customers. Those customers provide funding comprising fundamental research, applied research and engineering activities. The new manager will be responsible for engaging with these customers, understanding the role 8764 should play and ensuring staff are aligned to support these activities.

This manager will focus on delivering capabilities around malware analysis and vulnerability assessment with a particular focus on creating automated tools to aid cybersecurity professionals in detecting and mitigating cyber threats.

The manager must be able to develop ties between program areas to the department?s benefit while respecting classification and customer sensitivity constraints. The manager will also have programmatic interface responsibilities with external customers including the Department of Homeland Security. They will be expected to engage in Center, Division, and Lab leadership roles (e.g., LDRD Investment Area Teams, Center strategic planning), hire and mentor staff, execute and build programs with internal and external customers, and closely collaborate with colleagues both internal and external. The work of the department requires multiple security clearances; therefore, the department manager must have or be able to obtain an SCI clearance and should be comfortable obtaining additional clearances as needed.


+ Bachelor?s and Master?s degrees, in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
+ Eight or more years of experience working in a relevant field.
+ Two or more years of experience in leading/managing teams, projects, programs, etc.
+ Experience in national security applications.
+ Ability to travel.
+ Active DOE Q security with the ability to obtain SCI security clearances for this position. In order to obtain these clearances, U.S. Citizenship is required and polygraphs may be required.


+ Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
+ Experience working in cybersecurity threat space.
+ Experience mentoring and developing early career staff with a focus on career development.
+ Experience in program development with Federal Government Agencies such as the DHS, DoD, and Intelligence Community.
+ Experience with LDRD, other Lab-wide research initiatives as well as external publication mechanisms.
+ Experience in working with multiple customer communities represented across the Laboratory.
+ Expertise in one or more of the following: software reverse engineering, vulnerability research, program analysis, , host and network forensics, and data analytics.
+ Versatility, flexibility, resourcefulness, creativity, and the willingness to accept responsibility for the output and performance of a diverse group of individuals.
+ Genuine desire to support and develop staff.

The Cyber Systems Research Department conducts research to develop a deeper understanding of vulnerabilities of cyber and information systems, and researches advanced methods to mitigate them. Our work emphasizes development of effective automated tools to enable cyber security subject matter experts to efficiently focus their energies on the most challenging problems. Our technical staff has expertise in computer science, cyber operations, and related fields, and in a wide range of disciplines including vulnerability assessment, reverse engineering, malware analysis, VM introspection, intrusion detection, network and host forensics, mobile devices and networks. We work in close collaboration with other departments in the Information Security Sciences group, which focuses on the intersection of cyber research, modeling and simulation, data analysis, and cyber operations. We support research in multiple cyber program areas and collaborate closely with organizations in NM and across the cyber community.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a SCI security clearance.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
