We seek a dedicated individual for the position of a Transfer Station Lead Equipment Operator, who will be responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment, such as a front end loader, excavator, forklift, sweeper, compactor, and other equipment used at the Montgomery County Transfer Station. This position will be responsible for the Upper Lot and Public Unloading Facility.

This equipment is used to receive, stockpile, process, prepare for transport and load municipal solid waste and recyclables.

The Transfer Station Lead Operator is also responsible for the coordination of activities of the Equipment Operators, Shuttle Drivers and Transfer Station Operators and Lot Attendants.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service and interacting with the public is a primary component of managing the Upper Lot and Public Unloading Facility, as well as coordinating with the on site Montgomery County representatives and vendors
  • Some weekend shifts will be required
  • Performs pre- and post-operation inspection of the equipment in accordance with Company policy/procedures to ensure windows, lights, mirrors and rear view camera etc. are clean and operational.
  • Safely and efficiently operate equipment that may include: forklift, excavator, front-end loader, sweeper, and compactor, as well as other equipment using proper safety standards.
  • Continuously monitors waste for evidence of unacceptable waste in materials.
  • Continuously monitors the condition of the equipment to ensure it is operationally ready at all times to minimize down time.
  • Clean tracks or wheels on equipment, as needed.
  • Perform and document minor service on equipment, referring more complicated mechanical issues to Maintenance for repair.
  • Complete Equipment Condition Report and other reports, as necessary; report any necessary repairs to Transfer Station Manager, as needed.
  • Follow and enforce all required Covanta safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that shop is clean, equipment is serviced and stored at the completion of each shift.
  • Train or assist in training new employees.
  • Establish or amend work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality. Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of tipping floor, Public Unloading Facility, or work crew. • Direct employees in completion of work.
  • May interpret instructions, or job orders to employees and assign duties.
  • Confer with manager to coordinate activities of individual tasks or shifts.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


The interested individual must have a High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Mechanical, equipment or trade school certificate or training a plus
  • Minimum of 1 year of prior experience working at solid waste handling facilities or similar facilities, that are regulated by OSHA is preferred.
  • Must be familiar with all of the equipment used at the facility to process refuse and support baler operations.
  • A valid State CDL Drivers license, Class A is preferred.
