We are seeking an Intern \- Software Development R&D Undergraduate Summer



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to perform value\-added data analysis and participate in software development, troubleshooting, and testing

+ Support the Sandia RAPIER project, an effort leveraging revolutionary nanopore DNA sequencing technology to enable rapid, fieldable pathogen diagnostics for applications in national defense and global/public health

+ Be involved in ongoing efforts to capitalize on the unique capabilities of the Oxford MinION nanopore sequencer, refining software and evaluating cutting\-edge methods with the potential to benefit users worldwide

+ Participate in activities which will provide firsthand exposure to the R&D process, experience in tackling complex problems and datasets with a comprehensive system engineering approach, and opportunities to see their work applied to challenging real\-world problems



Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program

+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship



Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position\.



Additional Requirements:



+ Strong analytical skills and Python \(2 or 3\) programming knowledge



Desired:



+ Significant coursework or a college major in a science, technology, engineering, or math \(STEM\) discipline and familiarity with unix/linux operating systems



Department Description:



The Advanced Systems Engineering and Deployment Department \(8645\) is responsible for designing, developing, and deploying engineered solutions to fundamental national security challenges in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats\. The department is a multi\-disciplinary organization comprised primarily of mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineers engaging in science\-based engineering and component development to support a broad range of research and development activities\. The projects within 8125 often involve teaming with other groups with expertise in molecular biology, synthetic chemistry, radiation physics, and nuclear weapons to develop prototypes and impact how researchers study fundamental phenomena or turn basic scientific understanding into functional capabilities\. Principal sponsors for the efforts led by the department include the Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, and Energy; and various other federal, state and local agencies\.

Security Clearance:



This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.



Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.



If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.
