Job ID: 658619
Company: Sandia National Laboratories
Location: Albuquerque, NM
Job Title:Intern - SEERI Program Pulsed Power Science and Technology R&D Graduate Summer

:

We are seeking an Intern Summer - R&D Grad to participate in the Science of Extreme Environments Research & Innovation (SEERI) Program at Sandia.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Participate in small teams and perform work on the aspects of building, testing and analyzing modular pulsed power systems under development at Sandia. These include linear transformer driver (LTD), charged cable-driven and impedance-matched generator (IMG) systems. The other area of work is characterizing the physical behavior of the flow of extremely high levels of electrical power in the Z machine?s vacuum section. Opportunities include hands-on work in the laboratory to develop technologies and diagnostics, as well as computational modeling. Modeling topics include creating electrical circuit models of pulsed power systems, analyzing pulsed power systems with circuit models, analysis of components and systems using electrostatic and electromagnetic models, analysis of vacuum systems, and plasma modeling. This is an opportunity to participate in developing the next generation of pulsed power technologies that could be used to achieve fusion ignition in the laboratory and create unprecedented states of matter.

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

_Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position._

Additional Requirements:

+ Graduate student in electrical engineering, nuclear engineering or physics
+ 3 months of research experience, or equivalent, of work in a pulsed power or plasma physics laboratory or facility, either performing hands-on work or modeling

Desired:

+ 6 months of research experience, or equivalent, of work in a pulsed power or plasma physics laboratory or facility, either performing hands-on work or modeling
+ Experience in circuit modeling
+ Experience in electromagnetics modeling
+ Experience in plasma physics modeling
+ Experience with vacuum systems
+ DoD or DOE clearance

The Pulsed Power Accelerators Science and Technology Group develops and deploys pulsed power technologies for inertial confinement fusion, charged particle beam accelerators and z-pinch and dynamic material compression pulsed power drivers and for National Security applications. This Group maintains Sandia as the recognized world's leader in terawatt to petawatt fast pulsed power technology.

The Science of Extreme Environments Research & Innovation (SEERI) Program philosophy is to foster the search for future researchers, engineers, and operators in radiation effects, pulsed power, and high energy density sciences. SEERI works to help cultivate an environment to excite and attract talented future scientists, physicists, and engineers within in these disciplines by maximizing engaging opportunities to contribute to the nation through the unique access to facilities, resources, and broad programs found only at Sandia National Laboratories. Students are offered hands on flexible, challenging, interesting, and cutting edge research opportunities while being mentored by Sandia National Laboratories scientists and engineers. These hands on experiences are supplemented with technical seminars and facility tours which expose students to the broad range of engineering and scientific disciplines represented at Sandia. Student Interns are provided the opportunity and encouraged to present their work and accomplishments to their peers and the Sandia scientific community every August. In some cases, students are asked to present their work at professional conferences.
