We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Undergrad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Simulate magnetically driven implosion systems and compare to experimental data

+ Test and evaluate advection algorithms in magnetohydrodynamic simulation codes

+ Develop python tools to more efficiently employ complex hydrodynamic simulations into a framework suitable for rapid data analysis and application of machine learning tools

+ Develop key, Z simulated diagnostics to better compare simulation codes to experimental data

+ Organize and streamline existing simulation post\-processing tools, developing new tools, and new analysis tools for systematic comparisons


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program

+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

+ Undergraduate degree in physics or related engineering field

+ Pursuing a graduate degree in the fall of 2018 in nuclear, plasma or high energy density physics or closely related engineering discipline

+ Strong computational and/or programming skills

+ Experience with plasma simulation codes

+ Completed coursework or strong background in plasma physics

Department Description:

The ICF Target Design Department \(1684\) pursues theoretical and simulation based analyses and assessments of inertial confinement fusion \(ICF\), stockpile stewardship relevant, and other high energy density physics experiments on a variety of platforms, including the Z Facility and the National Ignition Facility \(NIF\)\. The department's core competency lies in the design and analysis of high energy density experiments, with a particular focus on ICF and radiation hydrodynamics experiments\. They rely on complex, integrated, multiphysics simulation tools, with a particular focus on the magnetohydrodynamics of high energy density plasmas, and on spectroscopic diagnosis of high energy density plasmas\. In carrying out their mission, department 1644 collaborates closely with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory \(LLNL\), Los Alamos National Laboratory \(LANL\), and the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment \(AWE\)\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.
