We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Grad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work with laser\-plasma instabilities of white light in plasmas; This project is intended to further understand the effects of wave incoherence on SRS and SBS\. The project will consist of two parts\. First, starting from the newly proposed theory, the student will study the instabilities in the linear regime\. The findings will be compared to previously published results\. If time permits, the second part of the project will consist of developing a computer algorithm to numerically solve the coupled set of wave kinetic equations\. Then, the SRS and SBS instabilities will be studied in the nonlinear regime by using the code

+ Assist in the study of waves in a newly proposed extended magneto\-hydrodynamic model for plasmas; The project will consist of two parts\. First, the linear equations describing the wave dynamics will be derived, and the dispersion relation will be obtained\. Second, solutions of the dispersion relation will be compared to those obtained from the original MHD model\. Hence, this project will shed light on how differently waves propagate in these two models

+ Work with wave\-kinetic equation analysis of inhomogeneous drift\-wave turbulence; This project is intended to advance our understanding of inhomogeneous drift\-wave turbulence in magnetized plasmas\. The first part of the project will consist of developing a computer code to numerically solve the wave kinetic equation with nonlinear wave collisions included\. In the second part of the project, the code will be used to study the spontaneous emergence of zonal flows caused inhomogeneous drift\-wave turbulence


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Undergraduate degree in physics or related engineering field

+ Currently pursuing graduate studies in nuclear, plasma or high energy density physics or closely related engineering discipline

+ Basic knowledge in Hamiltonian mechanics and plasma physics

+ Experience in computer coding including tools such as MatLab, Mathematica, or Python

+ Ability to numerically solving partial differential equations

Department Description:

The ICF Target Design Department \(1684\) pursues theoretical and simulation based analyses and assessments of inertial confinement fusion \(ICF\), stockpile stewardship relevant, and other high energy density physics experiments on a variety of platforms, including the Z Facility and the National Ignition Facility \(NIF\)\. The department's core competency lies in the design and analysis of high energy density experiments, with a particular focus on ICF and radiation hydrodynamics experiments\. They rely on complex, integrated, multiphysics simulation tools, with a particular focus on the magnetohydrodynamics of high energy density plasmas, and on spectroscopic diagnosis of high energy density plasmas\. In carrying out their mission, department 1644 collaborates closely with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory \(LLNL\), Los Alamos National Laboratory \(LANL\), and the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment \(AWE\)\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.
