The Radiation and Fusion Experiments department is seeking a graduate student intern to aid in the analysis of experiments in the areas of z-pinch physics, inertial confinement fusion, and the radiative properties of matter. The job requires working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and technologists in the processing of diagnostic data on the Z Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. Data analysis will be focused on optical, x-ray, and neutron imaging and spectroscopy data from experiments on the Z Facility to aid researchers in the processing steps required to more directly compare data between experiments.

Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Bachelors degree in the physical sciences
+ Experience with data processing using both the IDL and MATLAB software packages
+ Experience in the analysis of imaging or spectroscopy measurements in scientific experiments

Desired:

+ Experience conducting and/or analyzing High Energy Density experiments



The Radiation and Fusion Experiments department is made up of a multi-disciplinary team of physicists and engineers who design and perform high energy density (HED) experiments with a particular focus on radiation science and inertial confinement fusion. The majority of experiments are conducted on the Z Facility, the world's most powerful pulsed-power generator, in support of the National Nuclear Security Administration?s Stockpile Stewardship Program. The department actively collaborates with other national and international laboratories and universities on the advancement of magnetically driven implosions for multiple purposes including the development of the world's brightest x-ray sources, thermonuclear fusion in the laboratory, and the fundamental study of the radiative properties of matter.

Security Clearance:


This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site.
