We are seeking an Intern Year Round \- R&D Grad



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Work with a team of physicists and engineers to successfully advance the science of atomic sensing technologies so they can be employed as a practical sensing mechanism by overcoming challenges in physics and engineering

+ Support and advance an atomic physics experiment by aligning optical systems, building vacuum systems and other experimental apparatus, developing computer\-based experimental control and data acquisition system, collecting and analyzing experimental data, and developing manuscripts for peer\-reviewed publication

+ Work with staff to develop emerging areas in atomic clocks, optically pumped magnetometers, and other applications of atomic physics



Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



+ Earned bachelor's degree

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship



Desired:



+ Experience with one or more of the following: atomic physics, diode laser systems, optics, optical alignment, ultra\-high vacuum systems, mechanical design, computer control of experiments, and automated data acquisition systems

+ Excellent communication skills, written and oral

+ Excellent collaboration skills for working in a team environment

+ Experience with mechanical design and CAD software \(e\.g\. Solidworks\)

+ Experience with Mathematica, Matlab and/or LabView

+ Track record of successful research and development

The Physics\-Based Microsystems Department leverages a diverse capability set to provide science and technology products to enhance Sandia's national security missions\. The department includes a broad set of expertise including atomic physics, micro\-optics, and electrochemistry and electroforming\. As part of the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications \(MESA\) facility, we provide solutions including atomic physics based sensors; atom and ion trapping devices and systems; unique diffractive, sub\-wavelength and micro\-optical components and systems; critical electrochemical materials processes; and unparalleled micro\-machined devices\. In addition to work for internal Sandia organizations, we have an established record of successful engagement with external customers\.

Security Clearance:



This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.



Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.



If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.
