The term for this position is January - March 2018.

We are currently seeking a student that will support various technical programs in the area of computational materials and nano-science. Daily activities may involve writing code and performing data analysis. Students will work as a part of a team and should be able to present the results of their work at group meetings or summer symposia, so good written and oral communication skills are important.


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Undergraduate student at an accredited university
+ Enrolled full time in the term immediately preceding the internship
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Active student status
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the internship (maximum of one academic term and adjacent summer)
+ U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Enrolled in college level coursework in computer science, chemistry, biology, materials science or engineering
+ Have a strong grasp of computer programing with specific experience writing code in Python
+ Experience using LaTeX
+ Demonstrate increasing levels of independence and responsibility
+ Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite software is needed
+ Basic work skills such as reliability, critical thinking, and organization are expected


+ At least one year of college level coursework in computer science, chemistry, biology, materials science, or engineering
+ Additional experience or coursework in numerical analysis, statistics, linear algebra, and optimization is desirable
+ Higher level skills in MS Office Suite or other technical software for data collection, data processing, modeling, or preparation of manuscripts, presentations, or posters in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Adobe Illustrator
+ Mature oral and written communication skills are desired, as demonstrated by coursework or project assignments

The Nanostructure Physics Department oversees the management and operation of the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT), in partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.
