Job Title:Intern - Nanoscale Sciences Technical High School Year Round


The Nanoscale Sciences Department is searching for a responsible and conscientious high school student intern researcher, with the ability and aptitude to work in a team-oriented experimental materials research laboratory led by a Sandia researcher. The successful candidate will be a student with strong interest in pursuing further college studies in chemistry, physics, materials science, or engineering; and have strong academic performance with the ability to be effectively mentored by more experienced researchers. The ideal candidate will have relevant science course experience and relevant ?hands on? experimental experience or aptitude commensurate with their education level.

The candidate will be expected to be quickly adaptable towards learning and performing general laboratory support duties in one or more of the following areas:

+ Basic wet chemistry techniques, chemical synthesis, and materials characterization
+ Assist with the synthesis and characterization of novel materials for use in catalysis and bio-related applications
+ Assist with testing material properties (X-ray diffraction)
+ Synthesis of new materials using various methods, data collection, data analysis, and the ability to maintain a safe laboratory working environment

The position would best suit a student with an interest in chemistry, materials science or chemical engineering.


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Attending a local high school
+ Enrolled full time, as defined by the school
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ Minimum 16 years of age
+ U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Good oral and written communication skills
+ Ability to contribute in a team environment
+ General knowledge and good understanding of a suite of software, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)


+ Have a GPA >3.5/4.0
+ Have relevant experience with working in a chemistry laboratory in general and material synthesis, in particular

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts leading edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale; and enables the collaborative development of innovative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our main research focus is directed along four thrusts: (1) advancing materials & device understanding enabled by innovative surface and interface characterization (i.e., for photovoltaics, electronic devices, battery materials); (2) the development of nanoporous and nanostructured materials with tailored properties for enabling innovative solutions for broad materials applications (i.e., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, water treatment, and catalysis); (3) advancing our understanding and application of low-dimensional device materials (i.e., graphene, nanofibers, hybrid 2D-solids, quantum dots); and (4) advancing the understanding of thermal science at the nanoscale for novel thermal management applications. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site.
