We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Grad

The Nanoscale Sciences Department is searching for a responsible, enthusiastic and conscientious graduate student intern researcher, with the ability and aptitude to learn and work safely in a team\-oriented experimental materials research laboratory led by Nanoscale Science Department researchers\. The successful candidate will be a student pursuing further graduate school studies in chemistry, physics, materials science, or engineering; and have strong academic performance with the ability to be effectively mentored by more experienced researchers\. The ideal candidate will have relevant science course experience and project relevant hands on experimental experience or aptitude commensurate with their education level\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Learn and assist with the synthesis of novel materials via physical or chemical processes as needed by the project

+ Learn and assist with testing material properties \(i\.e\., x\-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, magnetic or electrical characterization, etc\.\)

+ Learn and assist with data collection, data analysis, computer/electronic interfacing, or computer modeling

+ Display the ability to work effectively and responsibly in a research team and contribute towards a safe and secure laboratory working environment


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ A background and/or references that demonstrate good oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment

+ General knowledge and good understanding of a suite of standard computer software skills, including Microsoft Office \(Excel, Word, PowerPoint\)


+ Have a GPA >3\.5/4\.0

+ Relevant science or engineering coursework, teaching, R&D intern or lab experiences relevant for project needs

+ Relevant experience with working in a materials research laboratory demonstrating relevant materials synthesis, characterization skills

+ Relevant experience in advanced computer interfacing, modeling or electronics

Department Description:

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts leading edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale; and enables the collaborative development of innovative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions\. Our main research focus is directed along four thrusts: \(1\) advancing materials & device understanding enabled by innovative surface and interface characterization \(i\.e\., for photovoltaics, electronic devices, battery materials\); \(2\) the development of nanoporous and nanostructured materials with tailored properties for enabling innovative solutions for broad materials applications \(i\.e\., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, water treatment, and catalysis\); \(3\) advancing our understanding and application of low\-dimensional device materials \(i\.e\., graphene, nanofibers, hybrid 2D\-solids, quantum dots\); and \(4\) advancing the understanding of thermal science at the nanoscale for novel thermal management applications\. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer\-reviewed, high\-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.
